office plugin and wordperfect files
Is anyone else using the MS-Office plugin to view Wordperfect (v8) files?
I have had no success so far in getting Wordperfect (*.wpd) files to display with this plugin. I have followed the readme directions, and checked out an earlier posting:
http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=1994&highlight=wordperfect
...but nothing seems to work.
1. I have the Word cnv files installed, along with Word 2003;
2. I have set up the office.ini file with the appropriate wpd signatures and full paths to the cnv files;
3. I have tried with earlier and later versions of the cnv files;
4. I have also tried putting the cnv files directing into the office plugin subdirectory.
5. The Office plugin is working fine for my MS-Word files.
What happens is that when I press F3 to view a wordperfect file, a flashing minimized Corel Wordperfect window appears in the Taskbar. When maximized it reveals a blank window entitled "1997 Corel Corporation Limited. All rights reserved - Document 2 (unmodified)". There is also an error message:
"This document [the one I have selected to view] is in use or specified as read-only. You may edit the document, but you must save it with a new name. Continue? YES/NO"
If I select YES, a display of the file in question flashes up very briefly, then vanishes. Underneath this window is a Lister window showing a binary view of the selected wordperfect file. Selecting "4" repeats this cycle.
If I select NO, it jumps straight to the Lister binary file view.
I am not clear why Wordperfect is being invoked, but there seems to be a conflict between it and the Lister at this point. Presumably the error message is the result of the *.wpd file in question already being loaded into Lister.
This is what my office.ini file looks like:

RE-STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
I have just checked things out on a WIN98 computer that did not have Wordperfect installed on it, and the MS-office plugin displayed wordperfect (wpd) files without any problem.
This - not surprisingly - leads me to think that it is not the plugin that is the problem on my XP notebook, but something to do with Wordperfect v8 itself, and how it responds to my trying to view its files using the Lister+office plugin.
This seems to be the sequence of events:
1. when I try to view a Wordperfect file with F3 using the office plugin, this action also seems to launch Wordperfect;
2. When Wordperfect tries to open the file I am trying to view with F3 and the office plugin, it finds it is in use, and sends an error message ("file is read-only or in use");
3. This either disrupts or terminates the office plugin's attempt to convert and display the file in question.
So my question now is: how do I stop Wordperfect from launching when I press F3?
This sounds now like something simple that needs adjusting. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I assume, that there is another plugin installed, which launches WP. Maybe IEview? Try to re-sort your lister plugins installed: Move "candidates", which are "suspicious" to be able to launch WP, to the bottom of the list (or move office plugin on top), so that office-plugin gets a higher priority than other suitable plugins.
EDIT: Oops, I just saw, that my suggestion don't meets your conclusions
1. I have the Word cnv files installed, along with Word 2003
5. The Office plugin is working fine for my MS-Word files
For this reason, my suggestion is obsolete... sorry

Not at all. Any suggestion is helpful javascript:emoticon(':)')van Dusen wrote: For this reason, my suggestion is obsolete... sorry
Smile. But I already have the office plugin at the top, actually...
No, for some reason pressing F3 is launching WordPerfect at the same time as it invokes the office plugin to convert the wp file I want to view.
It was a good idea of yours to suggest that some other plugin might be triggering WordPerfect. Something certainly is... but what?
My only hypothesis is that, in this instance, pressing F3 with the filname highlighted seems to have an effect equivalent to double-clicking on the selected file - that is, in some way the file extension (wpd) is being invoked to launch WordPerfect. But F3 should not have this effect, so this idea does not make sense...javascript:emoticon(':roll:')

....Oh boy! Do I feel embarrassed.
I decided to take the office.ini from my WIN98 machine and substitute it for the office.ini in my XP machine. When I did this, the MS-office plugin worked fine.
Comparing the two highlighted the only difference; in line 9 of the office.ini on the XP machine', I had the following (path and signature omitted):
9=wpd,,Wpft632.cnv
On the WIN98 machine, it was:
9=wpd,,Wpft632.cnv
So all my problems had been caused by my slavishly copying this line from the original post, instead of using djk's actual example. I guess that "
" (without the square brackets) signifies an optional switch for *.cnv files. Whatever its purpose when used, the effect of my including the option must have been to trigger WordPerfect.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing :-)
