Pack files: Option for "Always lowercase file extension

Post by *3ICE »

Hi,

I would love to be able to force lowercase file extensions when packing, say, to *.zip.

My problem is: It automatically changes to uppercase *.ZIP if the file name is uppercase. Or worse; even if it's a number. For example...
Packing folder "1": 1.ZIP (Not good, should be 1.zip)
Packing folder "A": A.ZIP (Okay, this one is logical I guess. Still I would prefer A.zip though)
Packing folder "a": a.zip (Good, desired result.)

I wish to use consistent lowercase file extensions everywhere, and manually renaming newly created archives' uppercase ZIP file extensions to lowercase zip dozens of times throughout the years is getting old.

Sincerely,
Daniel "3ICE" Berezvai

You cannot avoid it for all uppercase names, but for "1" it has been changed to use lowercase in TC 8.52.

Indeed, a switch to always force packed extensions to lowercase (regardless of the filename case) would be nice. I always do the same "renaming" routine too. :)

Normally using latest TC on:
x32: WinXPx32 SP3
x64: Clients/Servers from Win7 to Win11 and Win2K12Srv to Win2K22Srv, mainly Win10 though.

Thank you! That is excellent. I'll update right away. (Turns out I am a minor version number behind, on 8.51a.) Wish I updated sooner... So many manually renamed zipped folders :) Like 10 packs from C:\ELTE\Java\GY\1.zip to 10.zip and a ZH0.zip, etc...
It is about time I subscribed to the Total Commander newsletter. I definitely won't miss awesome updates in the future. Thank you.

Edit: I do compress and manually rename (from ZIP to zip) a lot of uppercase folders too. Not just numbers. An always-lowercase file extension option would be a welcome time-saver.
Edit 2: And while we are at it — a "create but don't edit" mode would be nice for making new files with SHIFT+F4 in bulk. I could do without alt-tabbing or closing my editor after every file is created. Edit 3: Never mind, solved with a workaround.

Is the always lowercase extension name feature implemented now? How to configure it?
