UPX4TC setup kit (UPX inside TC).

Post by *Nigurrath »

Hi,
I packed all the things for supporting UPX in TC into a zip archive available here

http://web.cefriel.it/~frumento/uploads/Programs/UPX4TC.zip

Includes
:arrow: MultiArch addons for UPX version 1.24 and 1.90beta
:arrow: instructions and screenshots how to setup two buttons to compress and decompress files with UPX (alternative way to Multiarch) This solution uses lst2str Tool already mentioned in this forum or anyway available in MaxWish site under the Tools section (http://members.lycos.co.uk/maxwish/tc_tools.html)
:arrow: two icons useful for that buttons.

For who's thinking what the hell is UPX :D , see here http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=180

Can you make a pack with everything included (upx, multiarc and your addons) ?
Just to be sure to have latest and compatibles versions of all required software

Why not, anyway at the moment the releases are those available at the upx site, 1.24 stable and 1.90 beta (that's to is stable enough to be used)..

Hi fabiochelly,
I added also UPX distributions in the UPX4TC archive posted in this thread, so as to have an unique package with everything needed to make it run.

Just tested the upx compression for exe's, for example:
before -> thebat.exe ~4.75mb || memory: ~7mb once loaded
after -> thebat.exe ~1.7mb || memory: ~9mb --//--
So it takes more memory, tested with other executable with similar results.

Cheers.

The memory used is actually virtual memory because the EXE is mapped into memory and the unpacked version too. It doesn't mean that it takes that much memory all the time.

If that program is the one I'm curently using (it's in foreground) doesn't that mean that the memory is actual memory not the virtual? Besides, the win. task manager shows that memory as real mem. usage rather than virtual size.

Cheers.

UPX 1.91b???

Post by *DiMarco76 »

Hi,
At the forum of upx.sourceforge.net I found following link:
http://home.pchome.com.tw/online/wowtiger/upx191b.exe
May s.o. will test if it works better with big office exes.
Its newer (August 2003) and it proofs that upx isn't dead.
Forum-Link: http://upx.sourceforge.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=361&sid=7565b3bf054c73f47ce8640db39e53ff

Otherwise it is said (also upx forum), that the big office exes work if they are packed with Aspack, maybe s.o. wants to develop a multiarc addon for Aspack.

Exes loaded in memory might be better compressed using DIET.
