Total commander fails to start

Post by *ofiraz »

Hi,

After one of my latest restarts, TC fails to start.
Tried uninstalling and installing - both the latest RC as well as the stable version (as of today October 15, 2016).

Would be happy for any help.

Couldn't find any info about such issue from recent period.

Thanks,
Ofir.

Please specify your OS, bitness of OS and TC, error message(s) (if any)
Without this information nobody can help you.

Windows 7 64 bit.
TC - 64 bit.
No error messages - tries looking for log files.

Try starting TC from Windows Explorer by doubleclicking totalcmd64.exe in TC's program directory - does that also fail?

Can you see the TC process (totalcmd64.exe) running in Windows Task Manager?

Tried all of the above suggestions - no success. When running TC I can see it for a short time in the Task Manager, and then it vanishes.
No option for debugging log level for TC?

Does it work when you rename totalcmd64.exe to something else, e.g. explorer.exe?

No - it does not (renaming).
I apologize, but as a software developer for many years, I don't understand why I don't get suggestions to look in some log file.
Isn't there such option?

Thanks,
Ofir.

TC does have log abilities, but only for operations related to working with files (copy, move, FTP, plugins and so on).

OK, one more try: Does TC start normally when you launch it via command line, forcing it to use a new wincmd.ini, like this:

Code: Select all

totalcmd64.exe /i="%temp%\fresh.ini"
If that doesn't help, I'm out of ideas, other than your system is not behaving normally, e.g. something killing processes.

The first place I would look into is Event Viewer. Is there any error related to TC?

You can also try "process monitor" from www.sysinternals.com . Set totalcmd as the process to watch, and try to start it. Maybe it hangs trying to read a specific folder, or loading an icon or so.

Looking in the internet - it seems that there is some product named Digital Guardian who may cause this problem.

Checking it with our IT...

So it's not a bug, it's a feature - apparently your company does not want you to run third party software. You will need to contact your IT department and ask them to allow Total Commander in Digital Guardian.
