Should TC ask for elevation on Installation to ProgramFiles?

Post by *OUrm7Vo2 »

TC can't write to the Program Files directory during installation under standard account login. Shouldn't TC ask for elevation first or should I just launch installation with "Run as administrator"?

TC's setup uses a manifest with "highestAvailable" setting. This means that a UAC prompt will appear if the user is a member of the adminstrators group. There will be no UAC prompt if your user is not a member of that group.

Apart from that, TC's setup doesn't require elevation. You can install TC to any directory, even to a location in %UserProfile% or something without the need for elevation.

So, to sum it up: You only need to manually run TC setup as administrator, if your user is not a member of the administrators group and you want to install TC to a protected location (like %ProgramFiles%). In all other cases, setup either prompts for elevation or doesn't require it.

Note: I left the case of disabled UAC out on purpose since this adds more complexity and should only be done if you know what you're doing, anyway.
