Does the Everything search feature in TC require Admin?

Post by *Adams »

I never used Everything before. Just got it downloaded. Looks like it requires Admin to do the indexing.

I don't have Admin access to my laptop, on which I run TC. So without Admin access, does the search feature of Everything in TC still work?

Everything requires admin rights because it uses low-level drive access. If you can't run it as admin or install it as a service, it won't work for you.

No, Everything does NOT require admin access. As a restricted user you cannot use the 'low-level drive access' as MVV pointed out but you can instead use the database-based way of storing drive contents in Everything.

I suppose database-based Everything search will work much slower than MFT-based one, or it will just take more time for indexing files?

I would say searching is extremely fast, updating the DB is of course time-consuming.

If you have admin permissions and require really up-to-date results and/or you don't want a large database NTFS-search is for you.

In all other cases I would recommend DB-based search.
