Could someone help me understand why I can't get a jpg file to associate with a program called XnView. I select the jpg file, go to Files > Associate with, and set jpg in the upper right box, then scroll down to Applications\xnview.exe and click OK. I believe that the jpg file should now have the icon for xnview just to the left of the file name. But, instead, the icon remains one for VLC, which I don't want to use. What am I doing wrong? |

A: Please follow these steps:
Place the cursor on a file of that specific type
From the "Files" menu, choose "Associate With"
If the desired program (e.g. Microsoft Word) is already in the list, choose it
If it's not in the list, click on "New Type"
Browse for the program you want
Click OK |
And here are some details about what happens in the background (wincmd.ini)

The problem is: when you choose "Open with" in the context menu just once, the association gets locked down by Windows. From then on, it's no longer possible to change it via any registry functions. The only way to change it now is to use "Open with" again. Just make a long right click on the file to get its Windows context menu to change the association. _________________ Author of Total Commander
