Inconsistent behavior for Quick Search

I have the QS options set as "Letters with search dialogue" on different machines. In one, typing a few letters like ABC will filter out non-matching files in the pane, while placing ABC in the search dialogue box (Ctrl-S). In another machine, ABC shows in the dialogue box but the pane still shows all files, i.e., no filtering. Why is that? The filtering is tremendously helpful.

Please be aware that QS (Ctrl-S) just enables the search function.
If you want the filtering mode too, you have to press the filter button on the right side of the search dialog

Oh, that was simple! But way too hidden, after all these years I couldn't figure it out! A popup would have helped.
