[9.0a, also 8.x 32/64] TC can't play some MP3 files

Post by *siealex »

TC can't play some of my MP3 files in its internal viewer (without any plugins) and opens them simply as text. For example, this one:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4XGhULwLK0nTDAwblhZVjdERDQ
TC 9.0a x32/x64, Win10.
It's a very old bug, maybe present even in 8.0 or earlier. WTF?

PS, confirmed on TC 8.50 x32 (on a Win98 VM!), so this bug is independent of OS version.

... this bug is independent of OS version
Nevertheless it depends on the OS itself
Without any plugin TC uses Windows media player from the system, it doesn't play the files by itself.

For details see Problems in quick view (lister)

This file does NOT open in Windows Media Player on Win98, but it DOES open in the same player on Win10. It does NOT play on BOTH versions of Windows in TC. WTF???

Sure, the file opens in a windows media player control.
TC does not have any own player integrated.

Actually the mp3 file has a cover picture integrated, which seems to confuse the windows media player control.

Removing the cover just for testing will play it without problems.

Yes, even on Win98! So, this is a TC bug, not a Windows problem.

Again: TC does not have any own player integrated.

If you need to play mp3 reliable: use a plugin
If you rely on windows media player control: write to MS to fix the bug.

It's a known bug of the used video for windows player, it cannot handle mp3s with pictures inside.

The solution would be to switch to the more modern DirectShow interface. There are plugins which already use this interface.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.
