No, they didn't vote about it, it was again postponed - this time to February 17. The EU parliament wants to discuss about restarting the process at this date too...

Postponed again ! This is a quote from Florian Mueller - Campaign Manager, NoSoftwarePatents.com :
Various countries don't want to support last May's political agreement anymore.
That political agreement had been fabricated in a ruthless and untruthful way by
then-Commissioner Bolkestein and the then-Irish presidence of the Council.
The Irish government simply does whatever Microsoft tells it to do. Microsoft is
Ireland's largest tax-payer since all of Microsoft's European business is done
out of Ireland. Unfortunately, the rest of Europe is stupid enough to let Ireland
not only suck a lot of potential revenue out of the rest of the EU but also to let
Ireland push aggressively for software patents. At least some country governments
have waken up to the software patent problem.

The sad thing is the big lack of democracy in the EU, that's one of the main reasons why country (Switzerland) has voted against joining the EU and even the EWR. Multiple European country parliaments (e.g. in Germany, the Netherlands) have voted against software patents and told their government to vote against them in Brussels, but they are simply ignored by the governments...

You're quite right. If it had gone my way Netherlands wouldn't be a member either. And it's not only a question of lacking of, but they also can fiddle around with it. When a rule has a negative impact, but it suits them, they say :
Well, sorry, but we have to, according to the EU. Sometimes the other way around : sorry, we can't implement this,
because we have national law.

today, with a enormous majority (648/680 votes) the european parlament buried the guideline for computer implemented inventions.
It seems that the parlament is not mutated to a branch office of the business software aliance

Of course but at least there seems to be hope...Sir_SiLvA wrote:@Jonas: this is not the end! just the beginning of the next round...

Yes, it's really good news - I can postpone my retirement a little bit.
But it's not over yet, there is just too much money involved...

OK, this is surely a posting about a totally outdated thing/event, but I just want to let you know anyway that I've submitted an "article" (or better: a "news entry") titled "Some software is seriously threatened by software patents" (or alternatively this link) for the CastleCops forum that I frequently visit and where I am a member for quite some time; in fact, I am a so-called "1st Responder trainee" there.
P.S. -- Oh and by the way, my nick on CastleCops is "satyr" (it's a link to my profile-page and that entry is also listed in it), same as here on Total Commander forum ...
regards, satyr
