Consider the URL http://www.totalcmd.net/download.php?id=registry located here.
This URL is redirected to http://wincmd.ru/files/wfx_registry_2.6.1.zip.
Total Commander does follow the relocation to download the correct file, but there is no way to save the file with it's correct file name. (Or is there?)

By the way I noticed wildcards are allowed in the destination when downloading by using the + button of the Background Transfer Manager, but are not allowed when using HTTP download or FTP download from list.
Create a file X.TXT with the following line:
http://wincmd.ru/files/wfx_registry_2.6.1.zip -> *.*
Choose menu option Net/FTP download from list, select the file X.TXT and download the file.
"wfx_registry_2.6.1.zip" is renamed into "_._" on my system (Windows 98).
Now hit Ctrl+N and enter http://wincmd.ru/files/wfx_registry_2.6.1.zip.
Saving with local file name "c:\*.*" I get a dialog: local file already exists - Overwrite/Resume/Abort ??????
Saving with local file name "d:\*.*" (and other drive letters) I get an error stating the local file name is invalid.
[Req] http download - get correct file name after relocation

Maybe I get something wrong, but without the detour to download from List I can't get TC downloading the file at all.
Using Ctrl-N and pasting the URL tries an FTP-Connect - what fails, of course.
Regarding the replacing of "*.*" to "_._ " I confirm this and it seems indeed very strange.
The same replacing occurs if you use e.g. ????????????.??? it leads to ____________.___.
