It's not a question of frequency but of habit.

I'm used to view files under the cursor while some other files are selected. And I'm used to rename the file under the cursor, not the selected one.

From this point of view It's not consistent to change the behavior for inplace renaming only because a file is selected.

And I agree with Hacker.
