ftp cannot connect 2nd time

Post by *bjornb »

TC ftp is no longer able to connect the second time.
(Error message: Create socket failed!)
You will have to shut down TC and restart to get another chance.

I think am rather certain on this now.
This was never the case before MS Update on April 12.
Never seen before - have used TC since it was WC 4...

Platform XPPsp2, TC 6.54a, ftp always passiv mode

Tried on 3 pc's on LAN here. Broadband connection.
Tried on 1 pc on another LAN. Same broadband provider.
Tried on 1 pc outside any LAN and connected via ISDN phone line.
Tried against multiple providers also.

I also tried TC ver 6.53 but it failed as well.

Anyone seen this?

Which MS Update on April 12 ?

One of them started more then 100 process to verify some OLE servers or something.. I thought I have a virus or something... Maybe some ActiveX socket handler was disabled after verification (who knows...).

You should try to start TC ftp from ERD Commander.

Think this is the one in question;
Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

What do you mean by 'ERD Commander'?

To bjornb:
Winternals ERD Commander.

To majkinetor !:
By the way, the MS06-015 changed some ActiveX behaviour. Cannot see how this should affect TC FTP in any way. TC FTP functionality is not dependant on ActiveX in any way that I know off.

Kind regards,
Karl

FTP in Total Commander does not use any ActiveX at all, so i doubt that this is the problem. It could be some other incompatibility, though, e.g. a virus scanner or firewall running in the background which monitors the connection, and fails because of some ActiveX problem.

Does the error go away if you uninstall update MS06-015?

No, it does not go away.
Now I maybe should move on to V-Com's SystemSuite Pro 6, as this was installed at the same time, and maybe has run in a way that has scrambled up my system a bit.

Anyone out there using BOTH Total Commander AND SystemSuite Pro 6???

I get this error msg the next attempt after a connection request has timed out (invalid address, server turned off...). Though no restart is required to restore functionality.
