[OT] Changing "Look In" Explorer shortcuts?

Post by *Sticky »

You guys are so smart, perhaps one of you has a solution for me.

When downloading a file, or opening a document from within an application, you get to use good old explorer to navigate.

M$ provides several shortcuts on the left for quick navigation (my docs, desktop, recent docs, etc.). Unforunately, I don't use the default location for things on my system, so these options are fairly useless to me and require than I navigate from the root more or less everytime I save something. Whereas, if I could have some of my CTRL-D locations quickly available, downloading files to the proper location would be much faster.
Here are some screenshots to illustrate what I'm talking about:
Example 1Example 2

I'm sure there's probably some way to change these shortcuts, and it's probably as simple as a registry change, but I don't know what to search for or even what this dialogue is actually called, so I've been unable to find anything in searches.

Anyone have any ideas or know how to do this? Thanks!

Yes! I knew it would be something simple. Thank you very much!

Already had it, I guess I'd just skipped over the places bar in the past. Thanks also to petergus for the link; Now it's in the thread in case anyone else stumbles upon it in the future.
Thanks again!

Try DM2 also. Among other VERY useful things it provides some folder hotlist, which can be invoked via a shortcut.

Or maybe placesbar

PlacesBarEditor is a free utility for Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows XP
that allows you to customize the "PlacesBar" that appears on the left side of
the Open and Save dialogs in most applications.

...or just edit Registry directly:

Code: Select all

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\comdlg32\PlacesBar]
"Place0"=""
"Place1"=""
"Place2"=""
"Place3"=""
"Place4"=""
Or use DlgXRSizer in my file store. Like DM2 it offers favourites list (realized via IE favourites), history and image previewer. It can also autoresize open/save dialog, automatically switch to details view and other funny stuff.

I vote for AutoDialogs. See screenshot:

http://i1.turboimagehost.com/b/4991/untitled.JPG

U can use subgroups, icons, have recent lists... etc.

Not freeware, but ....

U can try DM2->Favorites. The same as AD but doesn't have icons, which is very bad.

Problem with places bar is that not all applications use new type of open dialog (so some doesn't display places bar) and some other apps use it's won fixes to open dialog. AD handles them all.. and more than that...

Thanks icfu, I knew it was in there somewhere! I'll certainly check out the other pieces of software, too. Thanks to everyone!
My only problem at this point is that I can't seem to name the entries. This isn't really a problem except I added two different "temp" folders, one on my P drive and one on my C drive. But I think I have a work around.
