It would be nice if the "split" operation could be moved into the background.

Split is usually a long operation, otherwise i would not split. So it really should be a background operation, i hope nothing speaks against it.

I use the split very oftenn and it really annoying being blocked until it is finished.

Currently only the most used functions can be put in the background because it requires a lot of work to ensure that a function is really 100% thread-safe. I will consider to support background operation in other functions in the future.
