Newfile utility

Post by *mribbons »

I find it annoying in TC when I want to begin work in a new file I have to type in touch [somefile] or mkdir [somedir] because I'm a keystroke efficiency fanatic (rather lazy).
With Newfile you just press a function key, type in the name and press enter and shazam there's your 0 byte file in the active TC pane.

Here is my favorite text editor:
I tried them all and here is the one I prefer. It is open sources, very light and 1000x more powerful than UltraEdit.

I put it in my totalcmd folder and I load it with F3.

Another tool I use every day (not in connection with TC, but as TC, aas soon as you try it, you can't live without it):

DQSD (Dave Search Quick Deskbar).

URL:
http://www.dqsd.net

Screenshot:
http://www.dqsd.net/toolbar.gif

A little deskbar (near the clock in the taskbar) with an edit field to make searches very quickly on Internet.

For instance:

Enter "dic <word to search>" + ENTER to search a word in a dictionnary
Enter "25 usd>eur" + ENTER to get the conversion of $25 in EUR.
Enter "babel <word to translate> /from:en /to:fr" +ENTER
Enter "yp cubby, Chicago, IL" to search in Yahoo Yellow pages

It also replaces the calc:
Enter "20/36" + ENTER to get 0.55555555

This is my absolute must have app:
http://www.tcbmi.com/strokeit/

Free, small, nice gui (follows windows standards and no bloat).

Well what is it?!

- StrokeIt is an advanced mouse gesture recognition engine and command processor. What is a mouse gesture? Mouse gestures are simple symbols that you "draw" on your screen using your mouse. When you perform a mouse gesture that StrokeIt can recognize, it will perform the "action" associated with that gesture. In short, it's a nifty little program that lets you easily control programs by drawing symbols with your mouse.

Other wellwritten apps:
Zoomplayer (also must have) - http://www.inmatrix.com/files/zoomplayer_download.shtml
metapad - http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/
foobar2000 (audio player) - http://foobar2000.hydrogenaudio.org/
EAC (audio ripper) - http://www.exactaudiocopy.de
DLMage (lite getright) - http://www.dlmage.com/

That's OK, I found that it is the editor chosen for F4 that will open the new file.

It's also on Maxwish's page :-) (like everything... )
BTW:
It's a pity it has no possibility to look for .ini file at startup. You must pass it as a parameter :-(

Thanx. But it looks like it's the same version I have. Anyway, now I can mail him and ask about his plans ;).
Thank you one more time.[/face]

SciTE versus UltraEdit

First, this link is wrong. It should be http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html

Second, I've tried SciTE (I'm a registered user of UltraEdit) and I disagree that it's 1000x more powerful than UltraEdit. Of course, it has its merits, but there are lots of features in UltraEdit that aren't present on SciTE, for instance Column Mode, Function List, Project Tools, Hex View/Edit, ASCII Table, Insert Color (this one would be very useful in SciTE to configure itself), Window Synchronized Scrolling and other ones.

Although, there are some SciTE features not present on UltraEdit that IMHO UltraEdit would become even better if implemented: API suggestions, Language-related Tools and Folding.

That's just to express my opinion about these two editors, not to start a quarrel about it.

I agree that SciTE may not be that more powerful than UE, but SciTE has several features which has made me switch from UE. It's very much faster on my computer, and I love the text-config in it! The fact that it's free is also a major advantage to a poor student ;)
