The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

If a file name only contains an extension (first character a dot e.g. ".exe" ".gif") the wrong icon is shown in TC.

This will not be changed - such a file isn't shown in the extension column either, but in the file column...
