Icons for removable drives

Post by *mika »

Separate icons for removable drives is a great idea, but is in order to avoid "Drive not found!" error message, it possible to make a different icon for the drive that has media inserted and recognized, for example, green for recognized and grey for empty flash drive?

Old request…

:) Hello !

• IIRC, this has been discussed¦requested a long while ago in the French forum…

Ch. Ghisler said that he has no means to get the info from Win,
in order to know when the removable media is inserted or not…
- But yet, Win Explorer is able to distinguish and display the two states (still IIRC).

• Anyway, good to bump that topic, maybe some evolution is "on" ?

 Kind regards,
Claude

Anybody? At least could you explain in English why Windows Explorer is able to distinguish the state and Total Commander cannot?

When I place the cursor over the drive in Total Commander, it shows me "Removable Disk" when the media is not inserted and "Kingston" or other volume name when media is inserted. So Total Commander DOES know the media is inserted. It is just a matter of automatically replacing the icons when the media is recognized. Simple but very convenient because for some people like me it is always a pain to memorize which drive is my SD card reader

A very quick Google search revealed:
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/shell/shchangenotifyregister.aspx

So using [face=courier]SHChangeNotifyRegister[/face] with [face=courier]SHCNE_MEDIAINSERTED|SHCNE_MEDIAREMOVED[/face] does apparently give the notification when a media is inserted or removed.

So Total Commander DOES know the media is inserted.
No, ufortunately it doesn't. :(

The text is requested from the system, but it can be in all kinds of languages, so I don't know how to find out the actual state of the reader.
SHChangeNotifyRegister
I'm already using that for other things, but it doesn't tell the current state, just state CHANGES...
