It's not called a floppy disk by the way. That was 5 1/4 inch.
This is a diskette.

And obsolete ? Not at all.
I still keep them at hand in case I want to transport some small data to another standalone machine..

As far as I know, the "diskette" is a syn for floppy drive. "Floppy" means "soft". :?

Agree..

Reminds definitely too much of Windows Explorer or even worse of the old Windows 3.11 Winfile Programme.

Nonetheless, I think CDR's idea to think about it and suggest a new TC icon should be appreciated.

Anyway, the 3 1/2 inch diskette has been the T.C. icon for 10 years now. So somehow T.C. and the blue diskette have become synonyms.

It will be a hard task to find an appropriate substitute for the blue diskette which will immediately tell you, "Oh, TotalCommander!". - I admit at the moment I have got no good idea what a new TC icon might look like.

FYI the TC icon has been updated in version 7 - it is NOT the original icon anymore.

I think the main issue here is that TC stays (unfortunately) mostly a nerd's tool, and therefore still requires a nerdy icon.

[mod]Just before more people ask me - no, unfortunately I do not know who locked this thread and why, sorry.

A floppy disk a nerdy icon? What strange idea is THAT?

[mod]I locked that thread with regard to the insulting words in red above, in order to prevent useless rows. “Nerd” means moron, “Nerdy” means stupid, idiotic
I keep the thread locked for that moment, I guess that Ch. Ghisler is the man who decides about that.

new TC logo

Maybe with TC 8 it's finally time for a new logo. The diskette is beginning to look a bit dated. Perhaps a stylized representation of TC's basic layout would be refreshing, and would last.

Diskette is a TC symbol for years, I don't see any reason to change that...

In fact, this diskette is even better now than it was before.

In retrospect, diskette as icon for TC (WC at the time) was kind of poor choice (sorry author ;). First, it wasn't really imaginative ("files are stored on diskettes and this program is for manipulating files, so lets give it a diskette as icon" - boooring). Second and even worse, it could bring bad associations as diskettes weren't the most reliable media. But over the years it got better. Diskettes slowly died out and today's new users might not even know them. And for older users, well, people tend to remember the good things rather than the bad ones. So if diskette makes them remember the past, it's more how cool it was (everything was new, etc..) rather than how mad they were, when they transfered huge archive split over 20 diskettes and #19 failed.

When I saw image of diskette in the past, my thought was "hmm, diskette". When I see image of diskette (with right colors) now, first thing that comes to mind is Total Commander. It's no longer just one of millions boring diskettes, it's "The Diskette", unique symbol of TC (well, as unique as possible for diskette :).
