Rar files with encrypted file names cannot be browsed...

Post by *JFierce7 »

... and cannot be unpacked with the internal rar module.

If you create a rar file and encrypt it in WinRar, there's an option to encrypt file names as well in order to make them unreadable.
TC 7.04 shows (as earlier versions do) an empty directory folder instead of asking for the passphrase. Unpacking the archive (Alt-F9) calls an external rar.exe.

Looks like it's not a bug:
14.05.08 Fixed: Unpack encrypted RAR files also via "Files" menu, except when the file names are encrypted too (will need to use external winrar.exe)

Unfortunately it's currently impossible to list file names when they are encrypted. A lot of changes would be needed to make that work. It would also be inconvenient because the user would be asked for the password all the time: When browsing archives, searching the harddisk with option "archives" checked, etc.
Therefore it's currently not planned to change it.

Hi Clo -

actually I cannot see why this shouldn't be a bug. Without any explanation or warning TC shows an empty archive, which is not correct and therefore it is a bug.

I can, however, accept Christians explanation. So, according to

the thread should've been moved to "TC7 Behaviour which will not be changed", IMO. Not that it really matters. Maybe it could be found there more easily. And, maybe, it would be fixed in TC8 :-) (TC could cache the password for a given time like it does with the Administrators password).
