Oh, it would be about time... I haven't figured out how to easily rename a file, so I always slowly click twice on the file (which is annoying of course). BTW, what does F2 do ATM?

I use F2 for refreshing all the time but i believe it would be better if it was used for renaming like explorer. I have to admit though i have the same question with pdavit: "If Christian we go down that road then a whole list of shortcuts must be changed. F5 for refreshing and not for copying and so on...". I wouldn't like to see F5 change. I prefer it as it is. Are you considering to change F2 only? If yes them i'm with you. If you are considering other keys too then i don't know.

I'm considering to change F2 only, because many people don't even know what it does. Refresh does nothing if the contents didn't change.

I use F2 all the time :-)
But there is no problem (for me) to use Ctrl+R.

Me too, but I think it will be hard to me to get used to Ctrl+R :(

For me almost the first customisation in TC was defining Rename to F2. So I vote definitely for it.

Can you tell how to do such a customization? 'cause I've never found such settings...

Lets stick to my F2 example:
Options / Misc / Redefine hotkeys:
Hotkey: F2
Command: cm_RenameOnly (Rename (Shift+F6))
Press the green button next to it, and finally OK.

At some point in time, consideration may need to be given to a configuration setting to toggle between Total Commander keyboard settings and Explorer keyboard settings with, perhaps, check boxes for various Explorer keyboard settings, like F2.

I think you don't have to change the keys. For new users there
is a learning curve anyway. And maintaining the keys as they are gives the users that are used to it some rest.

If you plan on changes keys, why not provide some ready made key schemes.

Some time ago I suggested support for user-definable configuration schemes. Thus it would be easy to define and distribute schemes like 'Classic TC Scheme', 'Windows Explorer Scheme', 'Norton Commander Scheme', ...
See topic "Show TC's beauty & power by default – Config Schemes" for details.

If someone wants F2 to rename, he could easily configure it by himself, in my opinion. There's no need to confuse anyone by changing the TC behavior.
