Strange: U3P files are not longer supported?

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Strange: U3P files are not longer supported?

Post by *Mikefield »

Have here a strange problem with 7.5b only on one PC (XP SP3):
If I want to open an u3p file I get an "Error executing programm!" Also with a fresh wincmd.ini.
If I run TC 7.04a on the same PC, it's possible to open the u3p files!
The only different to other PC is, that I have, for some years ago, made here a link between
the u3p files and the u3 icon.
Not sure if it is a TC or a local PC problem.

u3p files are normal Zip files
The beta has no problems to open such files on my PC.

The u3p is probably associated with a program which is no longer installed. You can open the file with Ctrl+PageDown in this case to view its contents as a ZIP file.

U3p is and was never associate(d) with any programm IMO.
Could I associate it to the TotalCommander without to open a 2nd instance of TotalCommander?
The Problem is, that on the same PC! TotalCommander 7.04a can open these files, but TotalCommander 7.5b not.
That's the reason to open this bugreport.
Thanks for the Ctrl+PageDown hint, but this is only a workaround not the solution. Sorry.

TC 7.5 supports the new association "UserChoice" in Vista, which is used when the user redefines the association in the dialog "this file isn't associated with anything". It seems that this key can contain quite strange values. It can be found with regedit here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.u3p\UserChoice

Can you check what it contains, please?

Yes, please see the code below:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.u3p]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.u3p\OpenWithList]
"a"="Opera.exe"
"MRUList"="eabcd"
"b"="LaunchPad.exe"
"c"="Op.com"
"d"="MegaManager.exe"
"e"="TOTALCMD.EXE"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.u3p\OpenWithProgids]
"ft000001"=hex(0):
Additional:
It's now working to open u3p files in TC again!
I've compaired the registry from both PC and removed the following entry:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.U3P]
@="ft000001"

Hi, Mikefield.

Have just downloaded totalcmd.u3p.
There is no system-wide association of .U3P files with anything. There is no user-specific association of .U3P with anything.
There is no T.C. internal association of .U3P with anything.
Double-clicking the downloaded file totalcmd.u3p inside T.C. 7.50 PB2 worked just fine. T.C. opened the .U3P file just like any other .ZIP file.

+ Total Commander 7.50 PB2
+ Windows XP Prof SP1, 32bit, ger

Maybe it is worth checking the content of the regkey HKCR\.u3p as well, in case it exists. And where does the ProgID ft000001 point to?

Kind regards,
Karl

Hi Karlchen!

Please see my Add above. It was an entry in HKLM. Don't know how it was placed there,
but hope it helps Christian why TC 7.04a ignore it and TC 7.5b stops open with it.

:) Hello Karl !

• I can confirm totally the same right behaviour here, same OS (but French), same TC, same downloaded sample… :D
- Not any visible association - neither Win, nor internal TC (white page icon).
- My key in the registry :
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.u3p\OpenWithList]
"a"="Maxthon.exe"
"MRUList"="a"

Hello Karlchen, hello Claude!

Not sure that we mean the same. It's not a problem of the totalcmd.u3p.
I was not able to open any *.u3p file within TotalCommander. Normally you can open it as a zip-file.
But I got the error message in TotalCommander 7.5b. The problem is solved now.

2 KarlchenI've checked the registry, there is no regkey HKCR\.u3p, but here the ft000001:

Code: Select all

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ft000001]
"EditFlags"=dword:00000000
"BrowserFlags"=dword:00000008
@=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ft000001\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\U3.ico,0"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ft000001\shell]
@=""
It points only to the Icon. Please see also my first post :
The only different to other PC is, that I have, for some years ago, made here a link (associaton) between
the u3p files and the u3 icon.
The only open point is, why TotalCommander 7.5b stopped to open *.u3p files in dependence to regkey
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\.U3P. TotalCommander 7.04a ignores it.

HTH

Does it work with the U3P icon when you remove this key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ft000001\shell]

No, the u3p icon is gone when the shell key is removed.

Did you read this post above?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes
is just a redirection of

I have to correct some things.
Don't know why, but yesterday the u3p icons are shown after removing of
[HKLMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.U3P] and reboot. But today, they are lost.
It's independend from the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ft000001\shell].
