TC 7.5b3 doesn't show all files on Windows 7

Post by *Jorgo »

I just tried to edit the hosts file in Windows 7 which is located in \system32\drivers\etc

Although I have "show hidden files" turned on in TC, the folder "etc" and other stuff doesn't show up. It does show up in Windows Explorer.

Jorgo,
32-bit? 64-bit?

Jorgo,
In that case please use the forum search. Well known Windows limitation.

It's not a Windows Limitation, as everything works fine in Explorer. Was just trying to help. Bye.

Please try

Code: Select all

%windir%\syswow64\explorer.exe /separate
and repeat your conclusion.
It is a windows limitation for every 32-bit process

Explorer is part of Windows and is 64-bit. Windows does some things under the hood to maintain backwards compatibility, which, unfortunately, breaks the filesystem display for 32-bit applications a bit. Was just trying to help. Bye.

Indeed you need to go to
%windir%\sysnative\drivers\etc

to edit the hosts file in TC.

Wouldn't a system search for "HOSTS" show you where the file is?
chmod a+x /bin/laden -- Allows anyone the permission to execute /bin/laden

How do I un-overwrite all my data?

Hello, Boofo.

Well this depends - as always in life, things are rarely just black or white, but some shade of grey in most cases.
Assuming that we are still talking about Windows 64bit:
  • Total Commander, setting x64DisableRedirection=0: Using Alt-F7 in Total Commander will not manage to find the file "hosts" located inside %windir%\system32\drivers\etc.
  • Total Commander, setting x64DisableRedirection=1: Using Alt-F7 in Total Commander will find the file "hosts" located inside %windir%\system32\drivers\etc.
  • Windows Explorer (64bit), which will be used when invoking Start => Search: Windows Explorer (64bit) will find the file "hosts" located inside %windir%\system32\drivers\etc.
This was tested on Windows 2003 Std SP2, 64bit. Sorry no other 64bit Windows versions available here at the moment. Windows 2003 Std SP2, 64bit, does not support "sysnative".

Kind regards,
Karl

Strange. That is good to know. I don't use 64-bit yet but am planning to after my Intel i7 system build, or maybe not. ;)

OMG, this was driving me nuts! I'm on XP64 and I too was trying to edit hosts and couldn't access/find it with TC. I'll try that redirection thing at home, see what happens.
