Wrong filesize in .gz archives

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Wrong filesize in .gz archives

Post by *tom_ch »

I have some .gz archives, which are fully extracted - however, if I look at them in TC, there is always an incorrect filesize displayed.

e.g. Filesize .gz: 408'540
Filesize in TC when opening .gz-file with [Enter]: 109
extracted filesize: 3'145'604

Other sample:
- filesize .gz: 261'105
- Filesize in TC when opening .gz-file with [Enter]: 114
- extracted filesize: 1'710'019

I can provide screenshots if necessary. This happens at least on Win7 with PB8 and RC1.

Are you sure, that it was not renamed other archive type? Which utility has created these files? Could you please upload an example of such a file to rapidshare.de or other sharing service?

TC shows what is stored in the .gz header. Some on the fly packers (e.g. via PHP) seem to write wrong values in this field.

Perfect explanation from Christian. In fact these are PHP-generated files.
A bit misleading, but okay if you know it...
