TC750 rc2: Crash in network connection settings, context

Post by *StatusQuo »

TC 7.50 rc2, XP SP3

In control panel => network connections (german: \\Netzwerkverbindungen\ ):
TC crashes silently when calling and closing the context menu of a connection (both wired LAN or wireless).
  • call cm_OpenControls
  • enter folder "Network connections"
  • right click any network connection
  • close context menu with ESC or choose something like "Properties"
=> TC crashes without any message.

cm_Properties and the menu function "File => Properties" work like expected.

In TC up to 7.50 rc1 this worked normal, it seems to be introduced in rc2.

Tested some more:
100% reproducible here on a couple of different PCs,
running XP home SP3 and W2k SP4.

Hm, not reproducible here on Windows XP Prof SP2, 32bit.

Reproduced on Windows 2003 Server Std SP2, 32bit. But not reliably. :?

Reproduced on Windows 2000 Server SP4 Rollup1, 32bit. Every time.

Also NOT confirmed here in XP Pro SP3 (32-bit).
chmod a+x /bin/laden -- Allows anyone the permission to execute /bin/laden

How do I un-overwrite all my data?

Sounds like a bad shell extension, as usual. Make a forum search for Shellexview to get instructions to fix it. Maybe you are using O&O defrag?

I could confirm this, and there were no third party shell extensions in my right click menu, but some internal associations (for *.*). But after some testing around with different internal associations I can no longer reproduce the bug. I will try further though.

I can now reproduce the bug with a clean ini file - so it should be reproducable by others (Win XP SP3).

As you can see here - there is only default Windows items in the context menu: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/Networkcon.png

The context menu says (translated):
Deactivate
Status
Create Shortcut
Delete
Rename
Properties

I can reproduce this behaviour under WinXP SP3 rus with the following conditions:

1. Windows`s menu start => control panel => network connections
2. call cm_OpenControls
3. enter folder "Network connections" in TC
4. right click any network connection
5. another right click within network connections

=> TC disappears silently without any message.

TC7.5RC2
no internal associations except normal wildcards as *.jpg or so. no *.* association.

I admit that bad shell extension is a valid guess in such cases.

Yet, shell extensions do not turn bad all of a sudden between T.C. 7.50rc1 and rc2. This is even less likely, because different Windows versions are affected in my case. (Cf. e.g. here)

And O&O Defrag will not be found on any of the machines which I use, at home or in the office.

Kind regards,
Karl

1. Windows`s menu start => control panel => network connections
You are right - it seems to be a prerequisite that this is opened first.

In ShellExView I disabled everything that doesn't belong to the OS (product name=MS Windows, Company=MS), the crash is still 100% reproducible.

There's no O&O software on the tested systems.

And TC 7.50 rc1 (like 7.04a) still works without the crash, 7.50 rc2 does not.

Not here, after disabling the entries in ShellExView I rebooted, started TC as only open window - and got the crash.

I rebooted, started TC as only open window - and got the crash.
So do I, now.

The peculiar thing is that I don't always get the crash, but mostly I do. Wonder what it takes?

I could reproduce it now too, it happens because that virtual folder doesn't support the IContextMenu2 interface. The error was caused by some other bugfix...
