NTFS Descriptions (content plugin)

Post by *Led »

Plugin can be used to display, create and edit comments for files and directories.
These comments are stored in streams on the NTFS file system.

Advantages:
-no spare files in every directory (such as descript.ion or files.bbs);
-comment are preserved even after copying with explorer;
-you can create a lot of comments with different names (in different streams).

It uses new feature of TC 7.0: plugins in the attributes dialog.

Nice work, overall the multi-fields feature ! I just checked it.
Though when I apply a comment, the file date is updated. I don't want that.
Can you do something ?

TIA

Very nice plugin, thanks!

I have added some general related requests to the Change Attributes box here:

Thanks for the plugin!
2 remarks:
- The file timestamp is still changed. EDIT: sorry just read the readme :oops:
- I entered a comment through file properties. It is not shown, nor is it editable by your plugin. Are those comments not the same?

EDIT: one little thing in the readme:
"For manual refresh change dir or tab and go back." well, Ctrl-R or F2 should do the same ;-)

They aren't the same.

Standard NTFS comments are stored in stream ♣SummaryInformation which is not documented afaik. The stream content looks differently on differerent files although the comment is the same. I think some more information is stored in there, not only the comment itself.

No. You can view comments from file properties with shelldetails plugin, but edit only on the properties page.

I tried this before writing readme! Ctrl+R don't refresh columns because file date is not changed. Try yourself.

It's fun. After ~5 years of streams existing, after TC 7 popped out, finally we found a usage for them. Inside Total Commander only.

I don't know thwe plugin, but maybe with standard "TC file-properties - Plugin attributes" (lower part of the file-prop-dialogue).
