Dragging a picture file from Firefox changes its type to BMP

Post by *Michael_GR »

I sometimes save pictures I find online by dragging them from the browser to a folder. What I get is the file that was in the browser, with its original name, for example: MyPicture.jpg
This used to work fine previously, and still works fine if I use Internet Explorer, but for some reason, if I do this from Firefox, and the target is Total Commander, what I get instead of the original file is a BMP file with a new random looking file name such as: 3mh2dte9.bmp
The file isn't just renamed, it's actually a BMP file.
I'm thinking maybe I get the cached version or something.

I updated both Firefox to 3.5 and TC to 7.5 at about the same time so I'm not sure when it changed but I think it was when I updated TC.

Just to iterate, it works fine if I do this from Internet Explorer to Total Commander, or from Firefox to a normal windows folder. It's only the FF3.5-->TC7.5 combo that does this.

I run Windows XP with SP2.
[mod]The name of the programme is Total Commander® (TC for short), and must be used to avoid troubles with MicroSoft™.
Thus, I corrected it in your post, sorry.

Strange drag and drop behaviour of images
This is primarily a bug of Firefox 3.5 :(

:) Hello ! Welcome aboard !

• I cannot confirm this. I just tested as following :

1. Open my provider's home page in Firefox (it's an old 3.0b2 version, I don't use it a lot),
2. Spot a small photo, ensured me it's a JPEG (from local menu >> Save as… >> Cancel)
3. Drag&Drop that image onto a test folder in TC 7.5a
4. The image is copied as it should be, with its correct type and size (in the case : 126312.jpg - 1.3 KiB)
- Win XP-Pro SP1 (French) here.

 Kind regards,
Claude

Fixed in TC7.55pb1:
17.02.10 Added: Drop image from Mozilla Firefox returns bitmap via CF_HDROP -> use CFSTR_FILEDESCRIPTOR instead to get original image
Many Thanks for this adaption :)

Thanks! Indeed it's a bad hack, explicitly looking whether the dropped type is BMP in one format and a different image type in a different drop format...
