How can I edit the Registry with Plugin in Win10 pro

Post by *brahman »

Hi,

I just upgraded to Win10 Pro and I am trying to edit the registry with Registry plug-in.

I can go to the key, change it, but when I come back to it, then the value I changed didnt stick.

I assume it has to do with Administrator rights?

Do I have to start the plug-in with administrator rights and how would I do it?

I am starting TC 9.0ß4 with administrator rights. I am using Win10 Pro x64 but stilll use 32 bit TC.

Thanks for your help.
Regards, Brahman

You have to run the x64 TC and the x64 registry plugin.
If you the run TC as admin the plugin will of course also run with enhanced rights.
You can install the combined x86/x64 version of TC.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69
QAP 11.6.3.2 x64

Thank you :)

If I change to TC 64bit, will I still be able to use the 32 bit plug-ins?

I have a gazillion plug-ins, is there an efficient way of upgrading those that have been converted to 64 bit.

Well, it depends on where you want to change/set/add some value or key. In HKCU the user can do what he wants (with a few exceptions), all other registry branches (HKLM, HKCR) require administrator rights to edit. So you need to start TC as administrator to edit anything in these branches.

IIRC, the Registry plugin doesn't allow to edit any existing values in keys the user can't write to; the edit box is simply disabled in such cases. And, you probably get an error message (stating that access is denied) when you try to add new keys/values to these branches.

No. TC 64bit can only use 64bit addons

Most registry entries may be read/written with 32-bit applications so there is no need (mostly) in 64-bit plugin... But if plugin doesn't work even in elevated TC, perhaps there is a bug in the plugin (or some kind of yet another dumb M$ feature that brokes the plugin).

MVV,

Does it not edit the redirected 32-bit branch BTW?

No, it doesn't if you enable the plugin's option to show the 64 bit branch on Windows x64. IIRC this option is even enabled by default. I often use TC 32 bit on Windows x64 on customer PCs and have no problem in seeing and editing the HKLM 64 bit branch.
