You forget one more option: "Configurable". I'll vote for it. If I perform the quick search frequently, I should switch timeout on. At seldom use I need a bit more time to understand what I am doing and what is going on now ;). In this case I should be careful and slow. So, timeout is a bad feature.
Finally, I think that almost every feature must be configurable.

Please tell me what do you do usually after finding a file - copy/move/view/delete/launch? What operation quick search dialog disables? Most of operations you can do even if quick search dialog is visible.

In this case you may use Left/Right arrows (in brief view) or PgUp/PgDn keys to hide search dialog. BTW, I don't think that delay will help you - it is much faster to press Esc than to wait one or more seconds until search dialog will disappear.
