USB link data cable connection issue

Post by *AntonyD »

I've bought this cable: UANC22V cable USB 2.0 Network link - Gembird
On machine with WinXP I've installed Windows Easy Transfer software.
On my second machine I have Win7-x64.
On both machines when I've tried to click on button TEST on a dialog USB connection to other PC - I only was able to get error message which has been saying that - TС could not load port's driver. btw IMHO that is a VERY unfriendly message. Which driver? from which path? HOW it was tried to load this driver?
Many questions have appeared when I saw this warning. And all w/o answers...

When I've installed original software from CD - Go!Suite which came with cable. And this software has shown that cable is ok - all was working fine. I even have tried to use original Windows Easy Transfer - and all was fine too;)

Hence my main question here is - how I can check - or you can do that - that problem is only on TС side?

This cable has not been tested with Total Commander. See
http://www.ghisler.com/cables/
for a list of officially supported cables.

However, according to my searches, the cable should work. Are you able to see the cable in the Easy Transfer software? This software also supports other methods than the cable.
TС could not load port's driver.
This means that the Easy Transfer driver for the cable isn't found by TC.

yes - both programs - original tool = Go!Suite and MS's the Easy Transfer software were able to see and to use this cable.
so - how we can fix this issue? maybe you can send to me some small test program which will collect some specific logs for you? or I can make some well-known steps - I am ready to work with you on order to resolve this issue. Because I will have soon a rather big IT task in which I prefer to use exactly this cable and TC of course)))

You can check whether the file winusb.dll is present in
c:\windows\system32

On 64-bit Windows, make sure that it's there in the 32-bit system32 directory (by looking with TC 32-bit inside that directory).

I wrote a little test program which will try to open the USB port and send/receive some data. Please run it on both computers, and let me know what it reports. You can copy the output to the clipboard by right clicking on the window title. Then choose Edit-Select all and press ENTER to copy the text.

SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces failed!
GetDevicePath failed!
WinUsb_Initialize failed with error 6!
Tests complete, press ENTER to close

this is what I've got on Win7 machine.
And! next info was very strange as for me and will be for you too)))
On WinXP machine I've got 'Failed to load winusb.dll' !!
So I once again run search of this dll on winXP machine - and ... suddenly I could not find it right now!
All which I've done from the time when i was able successfully to find this dll - it is a removing of some tools - which for 1000% do not have any links with USB/cables/kernel-mode drives and etc....
So - I decided to reinstall EasyTransfer tool. I did it & I started once again the search of this dll. And once again I did not find it. So - now I am sitting on the chair and I am very surprised. So - do we know that EasyTransfer tool from MS 'IS really INSTALLING' this dll'? I've unpacked exe which is responsible for installing this tool - and I did not find winusb.dll in this "archive".

P.S. I found that only this http://rghost.ru/35825409 data the EasyTransfer tool is installing at the path ..\system32\drvstore. And nothing about winusb.dll/winusb.sys
Also nothing concerning these two files was not found in registry.

I've used latest available installer for this tool from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=4503

Well, it is installed on my Windows XP, but I am not sure it is installed by the EasyTransfer Tool installer, because that installer is an SFX file, and if I open it, I don't see any winusb.dll file.

Maybe you should try this driver http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7349 - it works fine for me between Windows XP and Windows 7 (even thougt it is not explicitly for Windows 7).

I don't know which application that has installed winusb.dll in my Windows XP - but both the write date and the changed date of the file (the same btw) is way before I installed the EasyTranfer Cable driver - so I don't think it was installed together with the EasyTranfer Cable driver.

But maybe the winusb.dll file is generated by it's installing program - creationdate = writedate seems to indicate that.

I have a backup of my original Windows XP installation from 2005 - and winusb.dll is not part of that backup.

I Just looked trough my Windows Registry - is looks like winusb.dll got installed with SP2 - what service pack do you have on your Windows XP?

Found this: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff540196%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Hmm - it is peculiar that you don't have winusb.dll - as you can see here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff540196%28v=vs.85%29.aspx it is installed with SP2 and I guess then also with SP3...

Thanks for posting the output from the test tool.
SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces failed!
Please check in Regedit whether the following key exists:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\KnownDevices\MagicUSBDeviceHandler\KnownInterfaces

If yes, please send me the contents. On my system, it has two entries:
\\?\USB#VID_050D&PID_258A#6&3a6a7fd9&0&1#{1eb7cb03-60a9-4d28-934f-4abeeebd0019}
and
\\?\USB#VID_050D&PID_258A#6&3a6a7fd9&0&2#{1eb7cb03-60a9-4d28-934f-4abeeebd0019}

This is the same cable plugged into two different USB ports.

Please also search for the string
{1eb7cb03-60a9-4d28-934f-4abeeebd0019}

It's the device interface of the USB transfer cable needed by TC, and it's not found by SetupDiEnumDeviceInterfaces with your cable.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers\KnownDevices already do not exist.
The last available key is ...Explorer\AutoplayHandlers

1eb7cb03-60a9-4d28-934f-4abeeebd0019 also is absent on both my machines.
But I found this GUID in TransferCa_FBC4C55696C581AE72F7C014EA9EA813252FB984\TransferCable.inf file - which i found in my system after "good";) installation of EasyTransfer tool. Does it mean that EasyTransfer was not able to setup for some any reasons a proper driver?

Yes, probably. Can you install it by right clicking on the inf file and choosing "install"? You may need to do that from Explorer.
