Comparison by content fails on large files

Post by *Blight »

Hi,
I did a comparison by content of a 153gb truecrypt file across two hard drives.

It resulted in an error message saying there's not enough memory.

Hello, Blight.

Comparing files larger than 2 GB might work correctly in Total Commander 8.0 beta 64-bit.

Kind regards,

It will work only if there is enough memory installed. I suppose there are no 306Gb of RAM on your machine. Comparing in TC works by mapping files into memory, so for large files it can only tell you whether the files are identical or different, but not show them side-by-side.

Actually it should work also when the file is larger! TC only maps the file into memory, Windows will swap it in and out during the comparison. I could compare two 6 GB files here although I only have 4 GB of RAM.

Maybe a pop-up saying it's impossible?

I had to write my own tool in the end :-/
