Show hidden shares

Post by *Thany »

Is there an option that reveals NT's hidden shares when I'm in a directory like "\\mycomputer"? I mean especially the shares like C$ and D$. I know they can be enumerated using the LanMAN API within windows...

Try the NetworkAlt plugin. You can find it here:

There is an option in the "Net" menu which should do exactly this (show admin shares).

Ah you're right! I was trying to find such option in the preferences, now I know why I didn't find it.

btw, "admin shares" is not really the right term. They're called "hidden shares" because they are hidden (doh), not because they're only for admins ;)

Actually Microsoft calls them both "hidden shares" and "administrative shares", see this link. They are there mostly for administrative purposes.

I never saw this option!
And I thought i was an advanced user... ;-)
BTW, how can I turn this option off (not that i want to ;-))? There is no checkmark in the menu indicating the status...

With this option enabled you can see only shares like this:

C$, D$, E$

but not, for example

test$

Those are only visible when using the NetworkALT Plugin

Hmm, I didn't know that these can be enumerated at all. Any ideas how that NetworkALT Plugin does it?

The hidden and administrative shares can be enumerated just like any other share. You just have to tell the enum function to enum hidden shares as well, basically.

Anyway, Christian, maybe it's time to add (or replace with) "Show Hidden Shares" to the Net menu? Actually, I needed the administrative shares, but it would be nice if hidden shares were shown as well with that option ;)

It seems that I'm already using the right function, but I'm especially looking for names with a '$' sign as the second character, because I'm only enumerating the admin shares, not the hidden shares. Maybe I will add some switch to also list hidden shares...

If you use this method, then not all admin shares will be listed, as the windows directory is shared with the "admin$" share name.

I have another question:

Would it be possible to save the option in the wincmd.ini?
Because at the moment you have to enable it every time TC is restarted.

So, what's the outcome of the discussion? Is there such an option("Show Hidden Shares) in 6.51?
