Speed in large directories

Post by *htenhoope »

I have been a long time user of Total Commander but lately I've been disappointed with the speed working in large directories.
I'm working on a major project moving thousands of files into one folder from numerous other folders.
As the destination folder is growing over 10,000 files the file moving becomes slower and slower.
Well, the moving is normal but then you have to wait until it is done calculating the size of the folder again.
I still have about 30,000 files more to do and to be honest, WinNC got TC beat on that one.
I like TC so maybe there is a setting that can be changed to make it fast.

Is this on a harddisk or SSD? If on a harddisk, I guess that the directory has been heavily fragmented. I recommend that you try to defragment this disk to make it faster. You should also update to TC 8.51 if you can. Here a directory with 70'000 files takes 3 seconds to load.

It's on a second SSD simulated as a folder on the main SSD drive.
Upgraded to TC 8.51 yesterday. Same result.

Is it formatted with NTFS or FAT? FAT is especially bad with large directories.

NTFS, I haven't used FAT since 1998 or so.

It should be very very fast (below 1 second) on an SSD with NTFS and only 10'000 files. Maybe some other program is slowing down TC? Can you try to temporarily disable the virus scanner?
