Odd behavior - file is selected for rename intermittently

Post by *OUrm7Vo2 »

How to reproduce:

1. Press "Enter" on a folder.
2. Go back up one level by double-clicking ".."
3. Press "Enter" on the same folder.
4. Click a file.

Do the above in rapid succession, the file rename text box with selected filename and blinking cursor appears.

The behavior is if I had clicked on a file for too long which of course initiates the rename text box.

The problem is intermittent but I have noticed it for years. I though maybe AutoHotKey was causing it but it still occurs when disabled.

I'd like to know if anyone can reproduce this...

Did some more testing and have updated the procedure to reproduce:

1. Create a folder called "test".
2. In this folder, create four zero length text files, call them test1.txt, test2.txt, test3.txt, test4.txt.
3. Press "Enter" on the folder.
4. Go back up one level by double-clicking ".."
5. Press "Enter" on the same folder.
6. Click the "test3.txt".
7. Confirm that the rename text box is activated.

This doesn't happen with any of the other files, only test3.txt (the third one in the list).

This is weird.

Just tried it on another computer. Same result except it happens on "test2.txt" file.

Confirmed, but you missed most important thing - this occurs on file on the same line where folder "test" is BEFORE you enter to it. This is probably the only difference between your computers.

Acknowledged. So we have a timing issue bug with TC?

The more I play around with this, the more scenarios I discover where this is happening. The latest is: if I click on a folder tab that is already active and then quickly (vary the delay time to reproduce the effect) click on a file that has the dotted box around it, the rename text box is activated.

Perhaps Mr. Ghisler could offer an opinion...

First of all - you must have InplaceRename=1 in INI file (or not present, then default is using).
Easiest way to reproduce is just enter directory by pressing ENTER and click on appropiate file (once). For comparison - when you enter directory using mouse you must click twice (as expected).

So then it's a bug and will be added to the to-be-fixed list?

I will try, but I cannot promise anything - there are just too many possibilities.

I don't believe for the actual TC on my fast PC.
Try to change double-click speed in your mouse settings.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69
QAP 11.6.3.2 x64

The two clicks are interpreted separately in different contexts on different screens, so I don't think it's double-click speed but a worthy suggestion.
