Rubberband selection in thumbnail view

Post by *Lefteous »

I already started a topic about the rubberband selection ( http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=308648#308648 ) but this seems to be quite a separate topic.

The rubberband selection works perfectly in short view but in thumbnails it seems to be totally broken. It was about to report a bug but let's say it's a suggestion.

1. Starting a selection between the items doesn't work.
2. You can start a selection anywhere as expected but no rubberband is displayed when starting somewhere on an item. Starting below the last item seems to be only way to create a rubberband selection.
3. As mentioned in the other thread the rubberband doesn't cover what is selected. This is simply against the basic idea of a rubberband selection.

I have tried it with thumbnails view, and it was horrible. So instead I'm selecting files from the start position to the end position instead. Of course I can't show a rubberband rectangle because it wouldn't match the selection.

So the desired behavior is to not support the rubberband in thumbnail view? If yes you should actually never display it (see point 2).

Is there a technical problem in supporting thumbnail view? Before the betatest started you wrote that selecting between the items should work fine with rubbeband selection.

No, it's supported, but differently, see my description.

What do other users think?

Currently I cannot contribute anything as I cannot even understand what Christian intends :?:

I intend to select files from the one where you start the selection to the one where you end it.

Why? In full view, using the rubberband does exactly this. Only in brief mode it selects a rectangle out of the files, which is normally not really useful.

In full view, using the rubberband does exactly this.
In full view there is only one file per row. So you could also say that the rubberband select all files inside the rectangle. So in full view it doesn't make a difference.
in brief mode it selects a rectangle out of the files, which is normally not really useful.
If you are not convinced of the helpfulness of a rubberband selection just remove it. It's really confusing to draw a selection over something that is not selected.
I still think it would be useful - rubberband selection means to select by creating as few rectangles as possible in a XY grid - known from so many other programs including file managers.

I also don't see why it is included in one view and not in another.

I just came back to this thread to ask everyone if this is the way it should be. Is this how it should be released?

This video shows beta 14 behavior

When the current selection style is kept the visual feedback should be improved. The rubberband is the way to go here. It could look like this.

This example would work like this. The user wants to select all files (in this case slices of a larger picture) displaying a red rectangle. The six are in one row, the last three in the second row.

1. The user starts the selection in the first line selecting from the first to the third column. The rubberband is a large as the thes three columns.
2. The user moves the selelction down to the third row. Again the selection covers the first three columns. The rubberband also covers these three columns but in the same moment the last three columns are added to the rubberband as illustrated in the mockup.

What do you think?
