Total Commander Networking problem (slow)

Post by *robert83 »

Hello Everybody,

I have winxp , win2000 , win98 (these work ok) computers, and for some reason (unknown to me) whenever I want to open up some share on another computer total commander waits for 20 seconds or stops responding (completely, unable to kill it with end process). I even downloaded the latest total commander 6.03a it works ok with the linux shares but will not work with the winxp shares . I checked everything with explorer and they work ok (though I needed to double click on the shares to make them open up...I mean I had to do that double click two times.)

Anyone has any idea what could be causing this ?

(the network browsing part is really fast , due to the fact that I use wins server , but whenever I wan't to open up a share it will take 20 sec or freeze , explorer works ok with these shares .... a few example share names knj1-vds2 , but this shoudln't be a problem right ? does the same with a simple c: )

Someone please help me!

Sincerely
Robert B

ps. : I use Kaspersky Antivirus 4.0 and 3.0 antiviral toolkits on my lan computers (30 computers)

:) Hello !
…I use Kaspersky Antivirus 4.0 and 3.0 antiviral toolkits on my lan computers (30 computers)
¤ You could try to disable the AV for a server and two or three client-computers, then observe what happens when you open a share.
:| Just an idea…

:mrgreen: Kind regards,
Claude

You may have a look here .

Try: Configuration -> Options -> Copy/Delete and enabled compatibility mode for \

or try to use the UNC-Path with a directory e.g. \\myserver\shareC\programme

Post by *robert83 »

Hi,

I've tried that, it didn't solve anything (enable compatiblity mode for \ ), I can only open my linux computer lightning fast , but it hangs with winxp shares.... I've got 30 computers with lot's of shares how can I possibly enter 10-15 shares to one total commander ?

what else can be wrong ?

I have exactly the same problem.

Allocating a drive letter to an XP share seems to help a bit.

Copy the following and paste it into Notepad, then save the file as name.reg (where name can be anything you want) - couldn't find an "attach file" option on these boards. After you've done that execute the file - it should considerably speed up your LAN browsing.
Also, if you're using VPN or Dial-up, don't forget to disable "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File & Printer sharing" for the Dial-up/VPN connection.

========== Copy here ==============

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters]
"IsDomainMaster"="FALSE"
"MaintainServerList"="No"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser]
"Start"=dword:00000004

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
"size"=dword:00000001
"AutoShareServer"=dword:00000000
"AutoShareWks"=dword:00000000

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace\{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace\{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}]

Thanks for noticing that. I editted out the 2nd line because I forgot to remove it when I combined 2 different registry files into one.

TC slow on network shares

Post by *PeHa »

Trying to access W2008 share I got extremly slow response. I tried to switch off icons (Configuration --> Icons --> No symbols).

Speed jumped maybe more than 10x... it looks now a bit unusual, but works fast...

Try using standard icons only (option "All" without option "EXE/LNK"). That way no icons are loaded from the server.

FWIW, I notice that Total Commander 9.x is a lot more tolerant of slowly-responding network shares.
Recommended.

It also offers a 'directory counting' dialog box and a Cancel button.
(..now running in a separate thread?)
