Drag files = "MOVE" option on default?

Hi,

I know about the right mouse button and the shift key to move a file to another folder by dragging it.

Is there an option to set it in the configuration (temp or permanent), so dragging a file will automatically be a MOVE and not a copy.

This would be very handy for sorting out large numbers of files.

I can't find that option, therefore if it indeed does not exist (yet) would you consider adding it to TC?

There is no such option in TC. Dragging works in the very same consistent way in all TC versions and configurations.

BTW I don't think that it is too hard to hold Shift key if you need to move many files to many folders without any additional confirmations and changes...

Correct the Shift key or the right mouse button is not hard, even with 1000's of files that need to be checked one by one before moving.

Though a (hopefully) simple option in the configuration under Copy/Delete or elsewhere which allows direct moving of a file, makes life a lot easier when dealing regularly with 1000's of files to sort out one by one.

You can utilize a script to move files without dialog.
move.vbs "%L" "%T"
In that script you have to handle errors or e.g. existing files on your own.


Such script you can call from usercmd.ini
[em_move]
cmd=move.vbs

and that way assign a shortcut to it.
SC+x=em_move

So you would select file(s), press shortcut, and they are moved to target panel.

I don't think that script will be useful for one who prefers mouse. And, script won't help at all in case of dragging different files to different folders of target panel.

However script will be really useful for sorting files if move rules may be written in script language and don't require too hard logic or human factor.

Well, MVV, you know, a script can be executed from an button too.
And here the new vertical tool bar of TC9 would come in handy.
Such script would just work with current active and target panel,
no matter which file(s) are selected in active and which folder is currently open in target panel.
So I assume that would work quite well. Like F5 and F6 key, but without dialogs.

Guys, I am a simple user, not a script writer/programmer.

Scripts are no option for me.
Besides that, sounds like an extra effort, push script key and drag with mouse.

Besides if the cursor is already on the file to select and then need to preform another action, might as well do the Shift key or right mouse button.

If you describe your sorting rules, there is a big chance that someone will write a script for you...

But as I said (if I understand correctly) it still is an extra click/key/or whatever.

When I am sorting the files, I need to view them one by one and afterwards a simple drag with the mouse is the simplest option. Isn't that why WC and after TC was created, to have 2 working area's. Sometimes I need more working area's and then just open an extra TC window.
The Microsoft Explorer is so outdated.

Been using WC/TC for 15 years or so now (registered). Never had the need for the forum, but the 9 beta had an issue I got solved thanks to Christian and my original question would be the easiest solution, just not sure if Christian whats to implement it or not.

If not, I will stick with the right mouse button option.

I just asked, because 9.x has loads of new feature and I, for one, would find this option very handy. Just drag with the left mouse button to move. It is easy to select or deselect that option in the configuration if it were available.

I case you mean:
- press right mouse button
- drag
- drop(release right mouse button)
- context menu
- select "Move"...

there is another possibility in TC to move files:
- press left mouse button
- drag
- press right mouse button (mouse cursor changes from "+" to "-")
- drop (release left button, than release right button)

I know both but use the second option you mention, same as the right mouse button turns into the Shift key.

Hopefully even mentioning this again will help others to get the most out of TC and their computer.

Anyway does Christian read these posts?
I can understand if he doesn't, because busy with 9 beta and other daily stuff and TC experts like MVV and probably more can answer most questions.

I did miss a suggestion for features on this forum, that is why I posted it here. Not a bug for 9beta.
