Installation Stopped Because of Error

Post by *kamc »

Dear Everyone,

I had to buy a new laptop which has Windows 10. I want to install TC, but already the installation process is stopped because of some error. All the time.

It’s vital for me to have TC, could you be so kind as to help me eliminate this error?

Thank you!

Dalai, thank you for your message.

It comes with the error icon of Windows and says,

"Total Commander Installer ceased to function.

A problem caused that the program stopped functioning correctly. Windows will close the program and indicate it to you if there is a solution disponible."

And if the problem persists, just download the portable version,
copy it to an directory of your choice and start it.
I never used an installer to get TC on a new system.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69

Thank you, Sqa Wizard and Horst Epp.

I downloaded at least 8 versions of TC – several times, all .exe files, and I always get the same message.

I don’t think it’s a separate installer – it’s just a way to express that the installation part failed.

I did exactly how I had done always in the past on my previous 2 computers – then, it always was this simple -.exe downloaded, installment, and ready to use.

I tried the portable version, too, no success.

Then from Firefox, instead of Edge. Same results.

I have no idea, what I should do...

You can unpack the tcmd900ax64.exe file using Windows Explorer this way:
1: Rename the downloaded tcmd900ax64.exe to tcmd900ax64.zip
2: Open the tcmd900ax64.zip file by double-clicking on it.
3: Copy the file INSATLL.CAB to you a folder of your choice.
4: Create the folder you want to unpack TC to - for example c:\totalcmd
5: Make a folder for the language files c:\totalcmd\language
6. Double-click on the unpacked INSTALL.CAB to open it (not on the one inside tcmd900ax64.zip).
7: Copy all files except all wcmd_*.mnu, wcmd_*.lng, and wcmd_*.inc files to c:\totalcmd
8: Copy all the remainder wcmd_*.* file to c:\totalcmd\language
9: Double-click TOTALCMD64.EXE to start TC

Now you only need your registration key (wincmd.key) from you backup of your old PC - Hey, why don't you just copy your backup of TC to your new Laptop ? ;-)

Disable your anti-virus software during installation. Such behavior ("Application XY has stopped working") is definitely not normal. If the setup still crashes, restart your system in safe mode. If TC setup doesn't work there either, there's something really really wrong with your Windows installation. You can simply extract TC to a directory of your choice in such case, but I find it rather probable that you'll run into similar problems with different software in the future.

BTW: Is this a Windows 10 Creators update by any chance?

Dear Petermad and Dalai,

Thank you both for your pieces of advice.

(Dalai, no, it’s not a Creator’s update.)

Thanks, and have a nice week!

Hi kamc. It seems like you gave up :? Don't do that

I made that mistake here when I was a bit younger because of a slight autism. Try my countryman Petermad's good advice and let us know, if it worked. You owe that much to people, who tries to help you.
