TC 9.0a x64: random crash

Post by *mag »

During the last 1-2 weeks I had 2 random TC crashes. For the last one I captured at least the WER file if it's of any help:

Not sure if it's the same, but I have at least some suspicion as for what the crash may be related to (they both occurred in similar circumstances). I tried to deliberately cause it today (with ProcDump active), however no success so far.

EDIT: In case it's the same I have to say I don't use any scripting tool with TC at all.
Those 2 times it occurred I was connected via SMB to one small NAS storage and the SMB session did time out already. Moreover the PC was locked and left unused during that time period. After unlocking it, the TC crashed after a while (and it was left in the background without being actively used since the unlocking).

Another crash today (same circumstances ad before) and it really seems to be the same thing as in http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=47839
I've got 3 crash dumps generated and all show the same analysis result:

Unfortunately Totalcmd doesn't even appear in the stack trace under "STACK_TEXT:" header. Therefore I can't do anything about it - it must be a third party software running in the context of TC, e.g. some kind of scripting tool, security software or so.

Same here: TC crashes randomly.

It all started after Windows 10 updated to Windows 10 'Creators Update'.

Just FYI

I suggest that you check all your Windows drivers and other tools.
Also Christian can not analyse if you just say "TC crashes randomly"

You could try getting a stack trace too, with Procdump:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/dd996900.aspx

1. Create new directory c:\dumps
2. Create a lnk file of procdump.exe or procdump64.exe (for 64-bit Windows)
with Alt+Shift+F5, e.g. procdump.lnk
3. Change the lnk file with alt+Enter
4. Change the command from c:\path\procdump.exe to
c:\path\procdump.exe -ma -i c:\dumps
5. Important: Click on "Advanced" and check option "As administrator"
6. Run procdump with this link file
7. Wait until the crash occurs.
8. Send me ONE dump from c:\dumps, or analyze it yourself with windbg.

I guess that you have installed a driver or system tool which isn't 100% compatible with the creators update.

I can only assert the latter. TC didn't crash before Creators Update. Not even once, but it does now.

Thanks Christian. Will try this and be back with the dump. Crash happens randomly, even while not actively using TC (ie. having it open and running in the background). No other program other than TC is crashing after the creators update (and before either)

Sergio

Just had another crash a minute ago.
For me, it seems to have started after the KB4020102 Windows update: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4020102/windows-10-update-kb4020102 which updates both the following DLLs:
Uiautomationcore.dll,"7.2.15063.332","1,818,624","20-May-2017","05:59","x64",
Coreuicomponents.dll,"10.0.15063.332","2,969,880","20-May-2017","07:02","x64",
which appear in the crash dumps and reports. I believe there was some bug introduced in that update which causes these crashes.

I have kb4020102 installed since 26. May without any problems.
So there must be additional factors on your machine.

Uiautomationcore seems to be related to accessibility functions:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/ui-automation/ui-automation-overview

Do you use any of these, e.g. a screen reader or so? It would explain why the crash happens in the context of Total Commander, but the stack trace wouldn't show a trace of totalcmd.exe at all - it's a separate thread in a dll belonging to Windows.

Not using any of that. However I went through the Narrator, Magnifier and High Contrast settings and also the Ease of Access Center in the control panel and disabled every single thing I could. But there were just few enabled. Narrator was completely turned off already.

Just to note - it really happens under some specific circumstances. Like a Samba share has been opened from TC and left unused for a while, TC itself is left in the background for some time as well..
Also as I use several Samba shares I must note that it seems to occur with only one of them (some old WD ShareSpace unit with some old Sama implementation).
If these 2 conditions aren't met, I don't experience those crashes (at least all of these crashed occurred exactly when these 2 conditions were met and never otherwise).

I can confirm that this error is related to Creator Update, see a thread in MS Technet, where similar behavior is discussed: Search for outlook-2010-fault-in-uiautomationcoredll-after-upgrade-to-win-10-1703-1506313

I've installed Win 10 15063 downloaded with MediaCreationTool into VMware Player 12. Then I've installed Adobe Reader, IrfanView, VLC and TC.
Made windows updates, rebooted, opened TC and went to bed. Next morning, the error was on the screen. What I can see in security event log is that exactly at the crash time services.exe successfully has logged in. Unfortunately I don't know how to provide more useful information.

I cannot reproduce the error. I've left the installation above open for 3 days, error did not happen again. I've installed a second Windows with TC only, left it open for 3 days, no error.

Of course, it would be possible to narrow it down by installing with Adobe and TC, then Adobe, IrfanView and TC and so on, however taking the information from the link above into account, it seems that uiautomation.dll is faulty and TC cannot do anything against it...

Thanks for the info about the Outlook 2010 crashes, it seems to be the exact same problem!
In this technet thread, someone suggests to explicitly load the dll because it gets unloaded by Windows 10 and then the crash occurs.

So, let's try this suggestion!

For test purposes, I have modified my "filesys" content plugin to load the dll on Windows 10:
http://ghisler.fileburst.com/beta/wdx_filesys.zip

Please download the plugin, then install it by double clicking on wdx_filesys.zip in Total Commander.

To make sure the plugin is always loaded at startup, you can define a color filter (which does nothing):

1. Choose Configuration - Options - Color
2. Click on "Colors by file type"
3. Click on "Add"
4. Click on "Define"
5. Click on "Plugins"
6. Choose plugin "filesys"
7. Choose property "Name" OP: contains, value: >
8. Click on "Save"
9. Enter a name of your choice, e.g. loadonly
10. Select the just defined type in the list
"Or select predefined selection type"
11. Click OK
12. Choose any color, it would not be used anyway
