[Solved] TC's dir size result is 2x larger using Everything

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

[Solved] TC's dir size result is 2x larger using Everything

Post by *Rob Weinstein »

I just noticed that sometimes TC's directory size calculation result is 2x larger when using Everything than when not using everything. See the screenshots here:

When Everything is selected and I restart TC, the first time I press spacebar on a folder, I get the correct number. All subsequent presses of the spacebar give me a value twice as large.

Here's a screenshot of the contents of that folder:

Not confirmed for TC x64 9.10RC1
and Everything Version 1.4.1.882b (x64)
For me all presses of the space bar deliver the same result
May be you have a config mistake in Everything
by adding folder indexing in addition to the default NTFS indexing.

At least 3 things can be responsible for that:

1. Everything is run as Administrator and TC is not, so there can be several directories TC doesn't have access to - Try it again when running TC as administrator and then you will probably see that the numbers are much closer to each other.

2. Some of the directories are in your Ignore list and are therefore not calculated by TC but are still calculated with Everything, if they are in subdirs to the current dir. I have Windows's winsxs directory in my ignore list, so a count of C:\windows with and without the Ignore list gives a difference of around 15.000.000.000 files ! (thats's why I chose to ignore the dir).

3. Everything's database is for some reason not updated - try in Everything: Tols -> Options -> Indexes -> Force Rebuild - that in conjunction with 1 and 2 made the calculation the same here on my PC

2Ghisler is there any chance of making Everyting aware of TC's ignore list?

@Horst.Epp

I'm not sure which folder indexing option you mean. Here are screen shots of my Everything options:

@petermad

1. I tried launching TC as administrator and I get the same result.
2. I have nothing in my ignore list: https://i.imgur.com/fXz4fxI.png
3. Force Rebuild fixed it!

Thanks!

May be you have a config mistake in Everything by adding folder indexing
You have to add folder indexing in order to utilize the new Everything feature for calculating Dir space in TC 9.10
23.08.17 Added: Configuration - Options - Operation: Option to use "Everything" to get directory sizes via Alt+Shift+Enter and/or spacebar. Needs recent Everything version with folder size index enabled (32/64)
08.09.17 Fixed: No translation for warning about missing dir size index in 'Everything' when activating the option to get folder sizes from 'Everything' in the settings (32/64)

Folder indexing is not the same as Folder size index enabled.
Folder indexing allows you to index non NTFS volumes for example.

Everything has to update its folder size index in the background when you move around files. It can take a while until it finishes when you copy or move a lot of files.
