Search mutliple DESCRIPT.ION files in subdirectories?

Post by *spikey »

I know TC can handle DESCRIPT.ION files which my old Acdsee 2.3 image viewer uses to describe jpegs.

I want to find all jpegs in subdirectories whose description matches the search string.

Can TC search through multiple DESCRIPT.ION files?

Thanks for any info.

What you need is not DESCRIPT.ION files search, but search through comments of files.
Commands - Search
Search for: *.jpg *.jpeg
Plugins tab:
Plugin: tc
Property: comment
OP: contains (or =)
Value: (what you search)

Alternatively, if you often search for comments, you can add it to the front page of the search function:
Commands - Search
Search for: *.jpg *.jpeg
Find text: what you search
Check: Plugins
The following needs to be done only once:
1. Click on "+" button to the left of "Plugins" checkbox
2. Click on "Add"
3. Enter a name: Comments
4. Specify type: *.*
5. Custom fields: [=tc.Kommentar]

Thank you for the information. I am now experimenting with those steps and getting some potentially useful results.

I have a question. How do I use your step which says "Find text: what you search"?

I can enter the text I am searching for in the "Value" field on the "Plugins" tab of the "Find Files" window. This seems to be sufficient. Why do I need to use "Find text: what you search"?

Petermad, thank you very much for drawing the diagram! It explains what to do very clearly. Unfortunately, I discovered this is not what I asked for because it locates the specific DESCRIPT.ION file itself which contains the search text in it.

On the other hand, I want to find all jpegs in subdirectories whose description matches the search string. Gral's reply uses the plugins tab to pass a value to the "TC" plugin which does what I want.

[correction: this does do what is wanted!]

Try again - it does find all .jpg and .jpeg files with the description you enter in the "Find text:" field - See: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/plugincommentsearch.png where a search for Image finds the 3 jpg's with Image in their description, but not the one with Photo in the description.

Just do as Ghisler described:
1. Click on "+" button to the left of "Plugins" checkbox
2. Click on "Add"
3. Enter a name: Comments
4. Specify type: *.*
5. Custom fields: [=tc.Kommentar]

I tried again and, hey, it works. I must have muddled something up when I got the DESCRIPT.ION file as the result.

Thank you.

Thank you for those two links. They seem to do something slightly different to what I was asking but, as it happens, they are of interest to me.

Do you know if either of them can put an "incrementing" datestamp on a series of files? For example, can it date datestamp one file at 12.00 hours, then the next file at 12.01 hours, 12.03 hours, etc?

I used to use the utility called Rename for this from http://www.ghisler.com/tools.htm#other but I wonder if your suggested utilities are superior.

Thanks for taking the trouble to list those three utilities. Unfortunately I want to completely redate the files (rather than change the date relative to the existing date).

Let me explain. My files are jpegs and I view them in date order. I want their date order to be that same as their name order (or maybe their "descript.ion" order). This means I need to completely redate the files.

I used to use "Redate" from here: http://www.ghisler.com/tools.htm#other but it's been so long that I can no longer work out how to install in in my new TC v9.10 or how to use it!

TC is not very intuitive for me! The Redate text file says this but what does it mean and what do I do?
You need to add the ReDate Addon to the Button Bar or to the Start menu of
Total Commander, type %UL into the Parameters field and clear the Start path entry.

Quote:

1. Go to the directory where you have put your redate_64.exe or redate_32.exe file.
2. With the mouse you drag the exe file to your TC button bar.
3. Right click on the newly created button.
4. In the field "Parameters:" write %UL
5. Click OK.

Both BulkFileChanger v1.51 and Redate 1.1.6 will do what you want. BulkFileChanger v1.51 has more features that Redate 1.1.6.

BulkFileChanger v1.51
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/bulk_file_changer.html
Bulk File Changer increments or decrements the file date, hours, minutes and seconds relative to the file's own timestamp or a reference date by a fixed amount or a sequential amount of years, months, days, hours, minutes or seconds.

Redate 1.1.6
https://totalcmd.net/plugring/redate_addon2.html
Redate increments or decrements the file date, hours, minutes and seconds relative to only a reference date by a sequential amount of years, months, days, hours, minutes, seconds or milliseconds.

Unfortunately no "parameters" field appears when I right click the new Redate button.

I am using TC 9.10. This is what I get: http://picpaste.com/Clipboard01-K6dbtFMu.jpg
