I am Running TC v6.53.

Ever since I moved from Win98/Win98SE to WinXP I am randomly having this error message when copying files and nothing is being copied. No international characters are involvedCopying them via Explorer poses no problems. The respective files can be read and even written to. Unlocker shows nothing.

I know that XP has it's own mind and doesn't let users do whatever they want. But this is plain stupid. I searched the forum but phpBB doesn't let me search the exact string.

Smile Hello !

- Hard to track down such a problem only with the information you provide above…

- Whether this should occur again, please make a screen shot of your TC (Alt+PrintScreen keys…) and place it @ a reachable location, your own server if you have any, or at an image-host…
- Let notice that the image cannot be displayed here directly inside the message, this is disabled. So, just set a link using the [ url ] … [/ url ] markers.

- I've also switched to XP-Pro in my ususal PC for some months, and didn't encounter this kind of issue… Rolling Eyes
- You might upgrade to 6.54 first, I guess, and see if the problem remains.

Mr. Green Kind regards,
Claude

Heh, describing an issue in words does magic. ;)

I was having this problem for a month now. It first did show up when I installed XP. TC was not changed during the installation, because I just copied windows dir and wrote the boot sector.

To Clo :: There's nothing to print-screen really. Just "Error: Cannot read <filename>!" [Skip] [Cancel]

I had selected too large copy buffer. I have 512 MB of memory. The buffer was set to 80 MB. After I decreased it to 40 MB the problem disappeared. To test I returned the previous value and the error came back.

Very Happy Glad to hear that the issue is solved.

- From your misadventure, I guess that I'ld add a note in the Tutorial about the buffer size…
- I've the default value here (low, 10 MB I guess). Same, 512 MB RAM, in which ~226 free at the moment…
… but a cache¦RAM manager. I suppose that the problem was random because it could occur only when you free RAM amount was too low, with regard to the 80-MB buffer.

Mr. Green Kind regards,
Claude

Just a hint FYI: there is a feature in Windows that text from such standard message boxes can be easily taken without PrintScreening. Just press Ctrl+C - and Windows will copy into the clipboard all the contents of the message box. Wink

This is new to me. :D I'm wondering if it was there in Win98. But error notifications in Total Commander do not use standard Windows message boxes.

Smile Hi !

- Good to know! But I thought prior to a capture of TC, supposing that a view of the source-file and the target dir could be helpful (i.e., about attributes etc.)

EDIT : Ctrl+C doesn't work for the TC error messages, you get an "error beep" while striking the keys… Under XP-Pro.

Mr. Green Kind regards,
Claude

That must be it.... but also by delay in windows while it is trying to reserve so much Virutal Memory.... I found that some "little longer" delays sometimes show this simptom.

Very interesting information. Thank you.... However, this is only true if standard msg box is called, I guess via MessageBox API func.

Then Alt+PrintScreen will not give you the whole TC window, but only the message box itself. Wink

Maybe, TC creates this dialog by itself, not via MessageBox API function...

• Indeed, Captain ! I meant after the message is closed.
- <PrintScreen> only to copy all… and then crop the useless parts … I do that a lot for years to add captures in the Tutorials and others…

- It does the most times, since there are messages having strings in the language files. But even some TC error messages are not translated… Same for some others from Win.

Not necessarily. TC can still get the string from the language file and use it for WinAPI message box, and it really does so! Smile For example, see confirmation dialog for deleting the file: the text is translated, so it's taken from the LNG file, but it still allows to use Ctrl+C. One of the parameters of the MessageBox function is the string it shows, so the program can prepare the whole string (translated, formatted, with different numbers and file names inserted and so on!), and then put this prepared string into the MessageBox function - and Windows will display it and will allow to use Ctrl+C.

But this seems to be offtopic here...

Rolling Eyes Not totally, let's say semi-OT, since we are talking about an error message prior…

• I thought this could be possible too… Hence, your Ctrl+C is always a good trick to know the message came from, TC or Win…
- AFAIR, there was an old thread about error messages, I'll try to find out it, it's worth to be activated again Razz
