No, templates like %P are specific for Total Commander and are not recognized by other applications, like TCER (unless such an application implements its own parsing of such templates, but TCER does not have it).

The readme file describes how to specify additional parameters for the editors, but they have to be fixed values, not expandable templates.]]>

In Spy++, track messages for SysTabControl32: WM_KEYDOWN, WM_KEYUP, WM_LBUTTONDOWN, WM_LBUTTONUP and WM_PAINT.

If you switch tabs using CTRL+TAB, then it will:
...
WM_KEYDOWN
WM_PAINT
WM_KEYUP

Only one WM_PAINT message. Good.

If you switch tabs with the mouse, it will:
...
WM_LBUTTONDOWN
WM_PAINT
WM_PAINT
WM_LBUTTONUP
WM_PAINT

There will be three messages to redraw. For one WM_LBUTTONDOWN message, two WM_PAINT are redundant.

Flicker is clearly visible. The entire area of the tab is drawn in white, and then black, rather than individual components. I can’t record a video because I did not find a video capture program with the necessary FPS.
Perhaps the situation is affected by the use of an integrated GPU.
Try lowering your screen refresh rate to 50Hz.

I think you have disabled displaying extensions for registered file types in Windows Explorer (which is by default in most Windows). AFAIK this stupid option affects virtual folders in TC too, and since MTP devices may only be accessible via virtual folders, you don't see extensions. So you should enable extensions for registered file types in Windows Explorer or use ADB plugins for TC.
You're 100% correct about this. After enabling this option in Explorer settings, things went to normal.]]>

Now it is a folder I once used to copy to in the Android/data-Folder

Also z.B. "Abba - Waterloo" usw.

1. Add language files WCMD_POL.* for Polish.
2. Run TC 9.5 32-bit.
3. Open Configuration > Options.
4. Go to Font dialog, change Dialog box font to Segoe UI, 8, 238 (Central European) and click "Apply".
5. Go to Language dialog, change language to Polski and click "OK" to close Configuration.
6. Reopen Configuration > Options (Konfiguracja > Ustawienia), click "Miniatury" (Thumbnails) and observe string 5431 ("Położenie bazy danych…) for "Miniatury: ogólne" (Thumbnails: general). It has space added in the end which overwrites the dialog border.

Alternate steps.

1. Add language files WCMD_ENG.* for English. Edit string 5341 to make it longer, depending on dialog font used, for example:
* for Microsoft Sans Serif

There seems to be a new flag "acknowledgeAbuse" to download such files without warning:
https://developers.google.com/drive/api/v3/reference/files/get

The question is whether I should really set that? It would be best to ask the user, but the error you get
"Error: 500 Internal Server Error"
doesn't tell me that the download failed because acknowledgeAbuse wasn't set...
For me you should set that as default and make an ini file entry to change it.
I don't expect such checks and warnings from a file copy plugin.
Anti-virus checks are the responsibility of the localy installed software which should catch it after copying.]]>

I have installed TC not in the standard path, but under "D:\Program Files\Utilities\TotalCmd". As an editor, i have set "%COMMANDER_PATH%\Utils\OpenFileTC\OpenFileTC.exe".

After the upgrade to 9.50, at some point (when i pressed F4), i received a 1-time message that roughly said that there is a better alternative (internal IIRC) to OpenFileTC and asked if i wished to use it. I said Yes.

Now, after pressing F4, i receive a message saying "File not found C:\Program Files\TotalCmd\Utils\OpenFileTC\OpenFileTC.exe The handle is invalid".

I opened a cmd from within TC, i entered SET and saw that %COMMANDER_PATH% pointed to "D:\Program Files\Utilities\TotalCmd", as expected. Registry settings also point to that folder. I manually edited INI files and saw that the editor was indeed "%COMMANDER_PATH%\Utils\OpenFileTC\OpenFileTC.exe". Also, manually running OpenFileTC from within TC seems to work fine.

So, the question is: what causes TC to translate "%COMMANDER_PATH%" to "C:\Program Files\TotalCmd" instead of "D:\Program Files\Utilities\TotalCmd"?

UPDATE: For some peculiar reason, drag-drop some files onto F4 button works fine!.]]>

I haven't adjusted the settings on either machine
Of course you have - on the screenshot from the 1366x768 machine, you are obviously using an iconlib setting in your wincmd.ini to show special folder and file icons and on the screenshot from the 1920x1080 you have disabled the default setting of "Show default folder/file icons from Explorer".

So that's why we say: please show us screenshots of your Total Commander settings for Icons and for Font.]]>

CODE: Select all

totalcmd.exe /i="%temp%\fresh.ini"

Hi Horst,

Maybe you dont have inplemented things in jar files. Try to download it in normal chrome/browser, and see if you get the message after u finished download, Google does the following: (scanning viruses)-> (wait for like 1 min till download starts)->Finished->"This kind of files can cause damage in your computer. Are you sure you want to keep this file?" (Save/Reject) and you need to push save every time, if you dont have this popup then you wont have the problem. I can't send the jar file but if you inplement a few things (boot server etc) into the jar, you should get this message.

Thx Mir
Tested download of JAR files from Google drive with Firefox and Chrome.
It short just says Scanning for viruses and then the download proceeds without problems.
But I don't see what should be the problem with the cloud plugin ?
The plugin doesn't have such environment and just copies the files without such checks.]]>

This isn't a bug. TC expects that the colors by file type in normal mode are quite dark, so they must be made brighter for dark mode.
It's wrong assumption.
1. Many people use classic color style in normal mode.
2. Colors listed in my examples are bright, but not all of them are seen as light as it's assumed from the formal brightness/lightness value. They are saturated rather than pale. White color has ZERO saturation.
3. Some people use bright saturated colors on white background as WARNING! In any case such colors shouldn't go neutral white in dark mode.

I tried a few options, and this looked best with the usual dark colors used for colors by file type.
If you have a better idea, please let me know.
Now I understand why it works wrong way.

If you want to simply modify existing formulas, don't allow results > 10000 - they lead to irreversible loss of color. Any wider range below 10000 (for example 7000…9500) is better than 8000…10000 – color distortion will be less noticeable. Don't forget that users can easy make proper colors brighter on their own but they can't easy revert white to the proper color.

Now another suggestion: Either keep saturation unchanged (which may be too dark) or make some calculations also for saturation (for example S1=0.7*S).

I think these two changes will be good enough. More light and less saturated is more pale, whiter as needed for dark mode.

And I have already describe other option: Use "Font color" settings from normal mode to modify formulas for colors in dark mode - subtract it, or make some proportional change…

I will take a closer look at your formulas this evening, maybe other users will find better solution earlier…]]>

Thx Mir]]>

Currently I convert the RGB value to HSL (hue, saturation, lightness):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSL_and_HSV

The lightness has a value between 0 and 10000. Then I make it ligher this way:
L1=(hsl.Lightness/10000)*3000+8000; // 0..10000 -> 8000..10000
if (L1>10000)
L1=10000;

I tried a few options, and this looked best with the usual dark colors used for colors by file type.
If you have a better idea, please let me know.]]>

The 'C' folder is almost entirely from version 1900, except for these files:
Alloc.c
Alloc.h
CpuArch.c
CpuArch.h
Threads.c
Threads.h
These are implementing Windows allocation, cpu and threading functions, which are different on Android.

The 'CPP\7zip' folder is almost entirely from version 1900, with a few small changes:
- all code related to creating archives has been commented out
- all code refering to assembler code has been commented out via #ifdef _7ZIP_ASM added
- += has been changed to .AddAscii( in some places

The following folders are from 7zip 1602, they are Windows-specific functions not available on Android:
CPP\Windows
CPP\myWindows
CPP\include_windows
CPP\Common]]>

Just by chance: do you know https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/security-risk-detection/concepts/application-verifier ?
I tried to start TC with Application Verifier "Basics" options set and TC crashed on startup (9.51RC2x64 as well as 9.22ax64). If Basics/Handles ("ensures your application doesn't attempt to use invalid handles") is unchecked in Application Verifier, TC starts fine.
I do not mean my note as a complaint that TC does not work inside a stress test environment like Application Verifier! From my experience, this tool is not so well known, but it helped me at least once in tracking down a problem in my application.
(No non-trivial software is bug or crash free.)]]>

Indeed, missing "full" 3D support prevented full Aero theme. Now I changed the driver to the "experimental" one for full Aero support, that seems to work.
The fonts set in the system are relevant, not those in TC.
Those should be on standard setting. Anyway, changing TC from size 9 to standard size 8 the line looks still incomplete, but a little better.

After switching I thought to see another layout for half a second (so I switched multiple times to check). I guess the OS decides on the fly if full Aero is allowed or not. And it doesn't give any feedback. At least there are more bells and whistles now after changing the driver. :)]]>

*.orange2 255 205 33 136 255 251 239
Input provided RGB values and notice resulting Brightness values. Now click "Dark<->Normal" button and check new colors automatically calculated by TC for dark mode. Here's what you should observe:

1. As you can see on the first 6 types (from magenta to orange), all colors bright in normal mode go white in dark mode. You can test other colors - any color with Brightness>=160 will go white. You must remember color settings for normal mode to properly change respective values for dark mode. I suspect that TC simply ignores base "Font color" settings for normal mode and blindly bumps values for other colors which are obviously related to the base color.

2. Now observe the last two types (orange1 and orange2). They are darker and they have different brightness in normal mode, yet similar colors go the same in dark mode. You may say "I can't see no difference in normal mode, they are already almost the same". Yes, but imagine two similar colors with visible difference in normal mode (for example for files with compressed attribute and for archives) which go almost the same in dark mode - it's wrong. It looks like TC bumps colors to a certain level rather than calculate some mean value.]]>

I took the first from the list that sounded like standard. The group title is called "Aero Designs", the theme itself "Windows 7". It's not the "Windows-7-Basic" from the separate group ("Basic and High Contrast Themes").
I added a third Screenshot with Windows-7-Basic theme for comparison - but can't tell a real difference between them.

I noticed yesterday, that there is a glitch or bug in that Windows dialog (at least in my Windows 7) causing that the theme I click on is sometimes not fully implemented, or another theme is opened. Maybe that happened to you, because to me the theme in all 3 screenshots in https://ibb.co/PTpTrjQ certainly looks the same to me.]]>

Currently it just looks for the first folder starting with the typed characters. The typed characters are forgotten (reset) after a few seconds.
HAAA! Yes, Quick search is matching more than one (first) letter!

... But "a few seconds" looks like a few milliseconds! For example, on TV box (with air mouse) is totally impossible to type two letters in such a short period of time, unless they are positioned next to each other. Not on smartphone is much better, except for those kids who are typing 2.000 letters per minute with eyes closed, for whom a smartphone is prosthesis which they are excluded from the hand only when they are sleeping. But they are using Facebook as a file manager, rather than Total Commander.

Mr. Ghisler, these "few seconds" should be extended for at least 2-3 times.
... And users will be happiest to get Quick search as close to TotalCmd for Windows.
Quick search is a great feature.]]>

Windows 10 internal zip
Assuming you mean the File Explorer tool, I wouldn't even bother with that, given Raymond Chen's May-18 post:
Why is Windows Compressed Folders (Zip folders) support stuck at the turn of the century?

So let's take a look at something more modern, the PowerShell cmdlet Compress-Archive:

CODE: Select all

PS C:\xx> compress-archive -path 1 -update -DestinationPath ca1.zip # create an archive CA1.ZIP
PS C:\xx> attrib * # show the attributes
A P C:\xx\1
A P C:\xx\2
A C:\xx\ca1.zip

PS C:\xx> attrib ca1.zip +p # set PINNED file attribute for CA1.ZIP
PS C:\xx> attrib *
A P C:\xx\1
A P C:\xx\2
A P C:\xx\ca1.zip

PS C:\xx> compress-archive -path 2 -update -DestinationPath ca1.zip # add a file to CA1.ZIP

PS C:\xx> attrib * # Yay! CA1.ZIP still had the PINNED file attribute
A P C:\xx\1
A P C:\xx\2
A P C:\xx\ca1.zip
However, going down this rabbit hole we see that compress-archive has its own problems, such as not preserving the PINNED file attribute in the archive:

CODE: Select all

PS C:\xx> .\7za.exe l -slt ca1.zip # Use 7za to display the attributes inside the archive.

I don't know why they check it every 600 ms, maybe TC restores its title periodically.
I'm not sure that checking every 600 ms is necessary. Maybe once the title is changed, it remains changed until one exits TC. I left this in as I was modifying obeg's script which has it. The way it is, the script modifies the TC title even if you exit and then reenter TC. One might try setting the script to checking much less often, say to 3000 or 4000, if one wasn't worried that the original title might appear for a few seconds whenever one entered TC.

Alternatively, it would be easy to modify the script so that there is no loop at all, and it simply changed the TC title whenever you hit a hotkey. So you could just call that hotkey after starting TC.

Or one could have a script that called up TC with a changed title, thus avoiding a loop, but one would have to be careful to always call TC via that script.]]>

If you're running on a machine that doesn't support 3D acceleration (like a VM), the Windows Aero theme will fall back to the same visual appearance as the "Windows 7 Basic" theme. Meaning that although you might not use the latter, in reality you are (hence you can't tell any difference because there is none).

Oh, and in regards to fonts: The fonts set in the system are relevant, not those in TC.

Screenshot, including font settings.
Left is normal configuration, right with clean INI. Both overlap the caption/title.

No. I normally don't use Aero, so I took the first from the list that sounded like standard. The group title is called "Aero Designs", the theme itself "Windows 7". It's not the "Windows-7-Basic" from the separate group ("Basic and High Contrast Themes").
I added a third Screenshot with Windows-7-Basic theme for comparison - but can't tell a real difference between them.
If it matters: This is running on a virtual machine without network connection and no regular online updates, used only for testing.
petermad wrote:Also you are not using the standard font for TC's dialogs (Microsoft Sans Serif, 8) - that will always give a risk of dialog texts that doesn't fit.
I do (according to TC's configuration), but it's font size 9 in my normal config. With a clean INI it's font size 8 - both are cut in this dialog.
Generally I don't tweak much with fonts. After some short tests with big font setting in Windows over 20 years ago I quickly went back to standard settings. The TC font configuration was set up and tested about the same time, obviously font size 9 was the biggest that didn't collide anywhere.

StatusQuo is clearly using Windows Aero Basic
Well, it does look like: https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/attributes-winbasic.png (here with Microsoft Sans Sefif, 9) - which in my Windows 7 is called: "Windows 7 Basic" and is listed under: "Basic and High Contrast Themes" - I am not sure that qualifies as being an Aero theme, which are listed under "Aero Themes"...

But now that got into checking themes - I can confirm StatusQuo's clipping of text with Classic theme and Microsoft Sans Serif, 9: https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/attributes-classic9pt.png]]>

Well, personally, I still think that "spell checker" (or "spell-checker") is correct since it can be found in a lot of places. OTOH incorrect spellings of certain German words can also be found in a lot of places, mainly written by people who don't know it any better. I have no reason to believe that English is any different in that regard. Anyway, I hope to read an answer from someone who - in my opinion - must know what's correct, and can possibly explain why. Maybe both versions are correct, maybe not. Hence my question above.

a question, how do you get your key in the registry?
First you have to convert you wincmd.key into a wincmd.reg Windows registry file - you can do that with this tool: https://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/wincmd_key_to_reg.exe (don't ask me where I got it from - but it works).

Put wincmd_key_to_reg.exe and wincmd.key in the same directory and execute wincmd_key_to_reg.exe and wincmd.reg is created - now double-click on wincmd.reg and answer yes to the questions. Rename your wincmd.key file in your TC directory and restart TC and see if it worked.
Interesting Peter, any advantages of using this? (using TC in different PCs without carrying the key for example?)

Thanks,]]>

When deleting, TC only deletes the junction itself, not the target, except when Windows reports it as a directory and not as a junction.
So maybe the way windows is interrogated, or the way it responds, is not reliable, because more than once at me TC has deleted the data, not the junction :?]]>

The only solution I found is killing the process using the task manager. Is there another possibility to solve this case?

What I did exactly: When synchronizing directories a lot of files has to be copied (>10 GB). Therefore I minimize the window to the taskbar and open another TC window, which is maximized. After some time a dialog of the copy process appears (e.g. because the file name is too long); this is notified by a flashing icon in the taskbar. When I press the icon in the taskbar, the dialog is displayed for a short moment but instantly hidden by the synchronization window. From here I see no possibility to get to the dialog to make the confirmation.

Thanks for any help.]]>

When moving from one panel to other and clicking at the "very beginning" of a file/folder name it gets selected/highlighted, at this point i only can click again to change the name (can't open with my oneclick opining confguration).

Solution: not clicking at the very beginning of the name, so the second click opens the file/folder.]]>

If this is a major issue , the title can always be changed by an AHK-script.
Here is a an excerpt of script i used years ago, to show current active path instead
Don't know if syntax still works today.
Obeg's idea about using an autohotkey script is a good one. I've modified the syntax and simplified his script to simply show "Total Commander" as the title. It works on my system with the current version of ahk, and hopefully will on other systems as well:

CODE: Select all

Loop
{
if (WinActive("ahk_class TTOTAL_CMD")){
   WinGetActiveTitle, sTotalCommanderTitle
   sNewTitle := "Total Commander"
   If (sTotalCommanderTitle != sNewTitle)
      WinSetTitle, % sNewTitle
}
else
Sleep, 600
}
Return

Unfortunately, it's never been repeatable. Choosing to exit, or to continue, TC after the error seems to make no difference. The same rename always works on the next attempt. I have not had any more errors since reporting the three that I had. That was the only time I can recall ever getting three of them in a day.]]>

For "Compressed" TC displays definition without attribute:
This should not be the case, if you add this to the above instructions after step 2:
  • set checkmark "[X] Search in plugins"
(otherwise plugin settings may be existing, but not applied for searching). After setting the checkmark here it says:

CODE: Select all

"*.*", plugins:tc.compressed = 1

I have my lincence key in Windows Registry - a little cumbersome to remove it from there.
Morning Peter,
a question, how do you get your key in the registry?
Thx in advance from HH, nearby Denmark.]]>

I have observed that some search definitions displayed by TC on "Load/Save" tab are wrong.
I have defined "Compressed" and "Read only" searches using attributes in "Advanced" tab.
For "Read only" TC displays proper definition:

CODE: Select all

"*.*", +r
For "Compressed" TC displays definition without attribute:

CODE: Select all

"*.*"
