Lister, Find text: add buttons for Find next/previous to continue search in desired direction

Post by *DrShark »

Currenly there are several keyboard shortcuts (including Ctrl+F5 to reverse search direction and Shift+F3 or Shift+F5 for searching backwards in newer TC versions) that could be used to find text occurrences.

However, keyboard is not a very convenient way to search if there is a need to look the dozens or hundreds of occurrences, espacially when it comes to backward search which needs simultaneous press of 2 keys, many mouse/touchpad/touchscreen clicks on buttons would be way more comfortable and also faster.

Adding the buttons for Find previous, Find next and some other functions has been already posted as part of suggestion to add a toolbar in Lister. I highly doubt the toolbar will be added to Lister, but there are other places available at least for these 2 buttons:

1. Main menu. Total Commander already adds buttons there for similar purpose:
'The internal file lister (F3)' help page wrote:If you open the viewer with multiple files, (see Configuration - Edit / View), you can switch from one file to the next/previous using the keys n (next) and p (previous file). Alternatively you can use Alt+Arrow Left and Alt+Arrow Right to switch through the files, or click on the << and >> menu bar items..
Buttons for finding text with similaer look, maybe with different number of angle brackets, could be also shown on toolbar.

2. Edit->Find dialog.
There we already have OK button which kind of works as Find next, however the dialog is closed after clicking it for each find next try dialog has to be opened again and again.
I see following solutuion here:
if user presses OK first time, the dialog is closed. On reopen, text of OK button changes to "Next" and clicking it won't close the dialog until the search text is not changed - then it again becomes "OK" one.
It seems there is also a place for "Previous" button in this dialog, which text could be shortened to "Prev." or "<" for translation purposes (full button name still can be shown in tooltip).
