F5 copy dialog: "+F8" button?

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

F5 copy dialog: "+F8" button?

Post by *StatusQuo »

(not sure, if this is a bug or intentional?)

In F5 dialog: what is "+F8" button supposed to do?
So far using it I could only take a look at existing definitions, but not load/copy an existing entry into the F5 dialog:
  • Tab "Load/Save" > Load: loads a definition.
  • Button "Save" asks for a (new) name to save as - in the same list from where it is loaded.
The only way back to the F5 dialog seems to be ESC/Abort button.
Is that how it should be?

It is new in TC 9.5beta - it does the same as the old [+] button, but it can now be accessed with F8, just like the new [+ F7} buttom

BTW, I don't see them mentioned in HISTORY.TXT (that's where I searched for their purpose).

Thanks for asking, now I (re-)discovered the old "+" button in TC 9.22a. ;)
But this behaves the same way, I can't tell the benefit there, too
(except for creating a new definition like ">Batch" wich then has to be typed manually or selected from history to be used).

But I found a hint in help file:
F1 help wrote:The button "+ F8" allows to define search filters
So I guess it's designed just to open this dialog, but not directly selecting and using something from there?

Regarding '+ F7' I found the following in the HISTORY.TXT

Code: Select all

15.05.19 Release Total Commander 9.50 beta 1 pre 1
03.05.19 Added: F5 copy dialog: Support directory hotlist (Ctrl+D) also in this dialog, only for targets in the file system (32/64)
03.05.19 Added: F5 copy dialog: Add current target to target list (section [TargetList]) with F7 or button, or remove if it's already in the list (32/64)
30.04.19 Added: F5 copy dialog: Insert target paths from wincmd.ini section [TargetList], e.g. 0=c:\first target\ 1=d:\second target\ (32/64)

In my opinion, only further new search queries (-filter) can be saved here with '+ F8'.
The existing filters and saved search queries can be used after clicking on the drop-down arrow (left of '+ F8').

In this context I find it interesting that when the tool 'Everything' is started and you click on '+ F8'
'Everything' is not automatically checked!?

Well, I think it makes sense - +F8 is only for defining and saving a new search, not for actually performing the search, so whether or not 'Everything' is checked, doesn't really matter. Just like the "Start seach" button is replaced with a "Save" button. Also notice the Title of the dialog - it is "Define selection" - not "FindFiles".

It is the same reuse of the "Find Files" dilalog you see in "Internal Associations" and "Define colors by file type"

Yes, you're right - but sometimes I get irritated by a missing check mark at 'Everything' in TC when the 'Everything Service' is running.
But I haven't noticed "Define selection" yet.

Thanks for your hints!

The reason why I added this is the following:
In Total Commander 9.22a and older, there was only one "+" button in the F5 copy dialog: After the second combobox. It allows to open the search dialog to define a filter.
In Total Commander 9.50, I added another "+" button, behind the first combobox. This button is for manually adding often used target directories to the top of that combobox.

When I first added this, the new "+" button could normally be reached via TAB. However, this collided with using the second combobox: I often press TAB and enter a copy filter, which failed now because TAB activated the "+" button now.

The solution: Do not make the "+" buttons reachable via TAB. Instead, use a hotkey (F7 and F8), and show them on the buttons so the user sees how to reach them.

Thanks, so it's not a bug.

Intuitively I thought: "Why can I enter search parameters, when I can't feed them to the F5 dialog where I came from?".
I guess I understand now, search definitions may be too complex to feed to F5 dialog on the fly, so they have to be saved first to be later loaded in F5 dialog.

F7/F8 instead of tabbing through all controls sounds good to me.
