Cannot connect to FTP - "Create socket failed"

Post by *SirZooro »

Steps to reproduce:
- try to connect to some non-existing FTP server. Wait 10 seconds and press Abort;
- try to connect to working FTP server.

When you do this, TC 7.56a will show error "Create socket failed!". Next connection attempt will be successful.

Cant reproduce that when i do it this way:
STRG+N -> ftp.gibtsnicht.de -> wait 15 secs -> press space twice
(one for cancel, one to close)
STRG+F -> enter on an entry
Connects just fine

I've seen it several times, but never found out the exact conditions required, nor I was able to reproduce it when I wanted to. Every time it just happened once and then it kept working.

I tried several reproducible scenarios with existing/non-existing hostname and reachable/unreachable ftp port, but without success.

This can unfortunately happen when the previous unsuccessful connection is still hanging in a TIME_WAIT state. This means that Windows is still waiting for a reply packet. In this state, connections to the same host (or sometimes to all hosts) will fail from the same process. The only way to fix it is to close the program and re-open it.
