TC stops copying/auto-renaming after 1000 files

Post by *johndoe666 »

Hi!

i try to copy roughly 15000 csv files from one folder to another on the same drive. Since all have the same name i use the 'auto-rename target' option. After exactly the 1000th file TC quits without warning, the last file written being "SomeFilename (1001).csv".

Can anyone help?

I'm using Windows 7 with the 64bit version of TC 9.21a.

1001 thanks in advance!

Cheers,
John

PS: I tried it with copy-pasting and Windows Explorer and it allways stopped at exactly 10000 files copied, claiming that pathnames were to long... (which definetly is not the case!; i could hardly think of a shorter pathname)

This sounds like you are copying the files to the root of a file system, right?
Or a Linux with ext2 or ext3 file system?

How that? That is not possible on NTFS.

Me think TC is not configured to handle that much amount of 'same name files' and stops after counter 999?
I have nothing found in History.txt if that is configurable.

I'm pretty sure the OP means that the files in the target directory have the same name as the ones that are about to be copied to the target directory.

Interesting approach, so you can see it too and then it makes sense, I did not understand it that way at first, now I see, thank you.

That's what I meant. Thanks @Dalai and sorry for being so confusing...: I searched for files of same name scattered over several folders, fed to listbox and tried to copy them to one folder.

No, it is Windows7. From folder D:\ABC\ to D:\XYZ\ .

Cheers and thanks for your efforts so far!

How exactly do you copy the files? F5, Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V, Drag'n'Drop?

Can you compile a list of these files and check if any of their file names are longer than 255 characters in length (only the file name part in this case!). Also please check if the full path of the files are longer than 259 characters.

Either way, even if a path and/or file name is too long, TC shouldn't just quit without warning. In fact, it should actually ask you if you want to keep the long names in both cases.

Me thinkt the "the 'auto-rename target' option" is available with F5 only?

I am here on W764 and I am just
- created 1111 empty files in Folder A
- copied them to Folder B, so I have two indentical folder contents
- F5 all of Folder A to Folder B with on-thr-fly option 'auto-rename target'
- *I* got in B
New file No0001.txt
New file No0001 (2).txt
New file No0002.txt
New file No0002 (2).txt
New file No0003.txt
New file No0003 (2).txt
...
New file No1110.txt
New file No1110 (2).txt
New file No1111.txt
New file No1111 (2).txt

So there is no max counter involved and it should work for John too. Something other may happend.

So what now? Please be more specific what you have really done, or nobody can guess what happens on your PC.

And I would use Multi Rename Tool before copy… It's much smarter than dumb auto-rename.

Stefan2,
New file No0001.txt
New file No0001 (2).txt
New file No0002.txt
New file No0002 (2).txt
I think the OP rather meant NewFile.txt, NewFile (1).txt, NewFile (2).txt ... NewFile (1000).txt.

I have recreated the problem by:
- Copying the same file to all folders on C.
- Searched for it and fed the result to listbox (6649 results).
- Tried copying (F5) from search list results to an empty folder in the root of C.
- Chose "Auto-rename target".
- The copy process quits after 1001 files, but TC is still running.

If I choose "Auto-rename copied" the problem does not occur.

Confirmed - doing the same.

Auto-rename is currently limited to 3 digits, that's why you get a mximum of (999).
