"cm_SrcQuickview" doesn't display .HTM or .HTML files.

Post by *AnotherGeorge »

Greetings,

I know this is not necessary, but just to let you know: I am a registered user of Total Commander:
Order Number: 03172009-9569-49804 ;; Product Name: Total Commander (former Windows Commander) ;; Order Date: March 17, 2009

I am a Webmaster and Total Commander provides me with tools and features that keep my work from being a nightmare. I have dozens of button-bar buttons for directories, files and scripts that provide an efficient work environment so I can concentrate on just designing websites. And, the dual panels are fantastic.

However, there is one little thing that I have finally grown tired of enduring. It’s the fact that the "cm_SrcQuickview" does not display the contents of .HTM or .HTML files. Once in a while it will display lines that aren't surrounded with angle brackets <like this>. In a test .HTML, I changed the "<" to "X<" and "cm_SrcQuickview" displayed all of the "X" character ONLY. This is true for v9.21a 32 and 64.

I looked at the other "cm_" choices and did Internet searches, but I couldn't find anything that would have TtlCmndr display those types of files' contents.

Is there any way to get TtlCmndr display those files? Now, I have to open them in an editor, but with other file types and can see the contents and copy text.

Solution:

View any file with Lister (F3)
Options - Configure - Show HTML as text with links - UNCHECK - OK

Hi and welcome George,

Which Version of TC do you use?
.HTM and .HTML files are shown for me without any problems in "Quick View" (Ctrl+Q ; cm_SrcQuickview)

For example I was able to save THIS page to C:\temp and view that *.htm by F3 and Ctrl+Q

And with ULister plugin:

It's still not clear, if it's report about viewing HTML as a source code or as a web page. In the second case there may be some problems with parsing, f.e. with embedded css or js code.

It's still not clear,
Me think, George is talking about view of source code like a text file, that is what TC-viewer do by default.
But with plugins (like Ulister) we can display html page in viewer more like a web page in a browser.
Let's wait till George will give us an answer :wink:

If you want to display .html files as in a browser you have to install a plugin for it - like HTML-view: https://sites.google.com/site/htmlview/
See: http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/listerhtml1.png

If you want to view HTML code, you have to disable "Show HTML as text with links" in Listers Configuration.

WOW! My Thanks to all that responded. My apologies for not responding sooner.

I appreciate the suggestions and help about using Lister, but my interest is in "cm_SrcQuickview". Right now, I just select a file and click a "cm_SrcQuickview" button the button-bar. Also, I don't know anything about Lister - but that doesn't matter because another button on the button-bar opens the selected .HTML in a "programmer's" editor that was specifically designed to display+edit .html files. But, normally I don't need that kind of horsepower and "cm_SrcQuickview" is quite adequate - especially with its copy-selected-text capability.

I am using v9.21, 32 and 64. My preference (and the only one I ever use) is 32 because the "cm_SrcQuickview" displays a picture's pixel dimensions in the footer, but the 64 doesn't. I'm an amateur Webmaster, and creating a website often requires images that I create in an Image-Editor, and I use cmSQv to view the images. I often use it for viewing images created in the final website kit too.

My lack of clarity before is because the issue is much simpler than my oversight conveyed. The publishing of a website creates an .html file, and usually some subordinate .htm files. A GREATLY simplified .html file looks like this:
=======================================
<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
<meta charset="utf-8">
<title>Untitled Page</title>
<meta name="generator" content="WYSIWYG Web Builder 14 - http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com">
<link href="0_flower.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/x-icon">
<style>
[deleted]
</style>
</head>
<body>
<div id="container">
<div id="wb_Image1" style="position:absolute;left:85px;top:50px;width:800px;height:600px;z-index:0;">
<img src="images/2000LED%20N%20with%20Yellow%20Text%208x6.jpg" id="Image1" alt="">
</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>
=======================================

As I vaguely recall, no version of TTlCmndr's "cm_SrcQuickview" ever displayed the contents. If you wish, just copy the text between the === lines and make an ANSI or UTF-8 text file with a .html or .htm extension. For me, all that is shown in the other panel is a big white patch. What's interesting to me is that even the "[deleted]" part is white-space even though that's not "html" stuff - in fact, I just made another one with two words of plain text instead of [deleted] and I still got got the big white patch.

Thanks again for you kind attention.

Do the following:
1. Make sure Quickview is not active in either panel.
2. Put the cursor over your .htm(l) file and press F3.
3. In the Menu of the opened Lister window choose "Options" -> "Configure...".
4. In the "Configure Lister" dialog remove the checkmark at "Show HTML as text with links" (near the bottom of the dialog).
5. Click "OK" and close the Lister window.
6. Press Ctrl+Q or use your cm_SrcQuickview button
Now the QuickView should show your HTML code.

Note - Lister and QuickView are basically the same, QuickView is just shown in the file panel in stead of in a separate window, and the content of QuickView is changed when you move the cursor to another file. You can also have QuickView shown in a separate window by using Shift+Ctrl+Q or by using the cm_SeparateQuickView command.

This is why you have to configure QuickView from the Lister Window.

You can also get to the "Configure Lister" dialog from TC's main menu: "Configuration" -> "Options..." -> "Edit/View" -> "Configure internal viewer"

As you already know, QuickView command is just a Lister call, and Lister may call plugins if needed. If you don't define any plugin or external viewer to display pictures, Lister will use system libraries for that job. Depending on OS version those libraries may have some limitations or bugs (f.e. pictures are NOT displayed if they aren't completely downloaded or if they are optimized with some exotic third party tools), so many users prefer IrfanView or XnView as picture viewers called by Lister.

Any file can be displayed in more than one mode (hexadecimal view, text view, raw view etc.), so "display the content" means NOTHING if you don't specify what display mode you want to use.
Lister allows to configure those modes and switch them if needed also for quick view. With HTML file displayed as web page go to the quick view panel (press Tab or click mouse) and press 1 to see text view (html code), then press 5 to see web page again. You can use F3 to display file in Lister window and learn other display options available in Lister menu.

I understand what you mean and what you want from the very beginning.
It's simple question and simple solution.
Quick View does not have a configuration window - what you want, must be set in Lister.
Just do it.

Again, My Thanks to everyone who made inputs to this thread.

To my delight, PeterMad entered some simplistic (and necessarily so) comments that included absolute steps. His approach was undeniably necessary because I was clearly uncertain as to what to do. And, that was in spite of the fact that a previous entry directed me to do the same thing in less detail, BUT which was still clear and quite adequate for the purpose.

PeterMad's approach was necessary at that point in the thread and it served to coalesce previous inputs in my mind. Previous inputs about Lister went unheeded because I didn't know that QuickView was an integral part of Lister. Early on, I had dismissed the use of Lister because I had a button to open the selected HTML file with my go-to HTML editor. It formats the display to accommodate the structure of HTML files in a way that makes it my go-to HTML editor. Whereas it is not easy to switch around between various HTML files, it does provide editing capabilities.

Un-checking that Lister>Options box worked to display the contents of HTML files in QuickView (and Lister), which, with its copy-selected-text capability, is the easiest way to just view or borrow segments from other HTML files.

I probably won't revisit this thread. I am grateful for the kind comments and help afforded me in this thread.

======= A side note =======
When I'm finished with a test HTML file, I add a ".txt" extension to it so I don't accidentally execute the HTML file. In preparation for this thread input, I created some dummy-html text files with fewer and fewer pieces of the whole HTML file that I put in my previous input to investigate what it was that made QuickView not display it. It finally got down to just:

<head>
</head>

Those are valid HTML tags. It wasn't displayed. It wasn't displayed when a ".txt" was tacked on. Then, I tried variations of valid and invalid tags until I got down to just this:

<this>

That too was not displayed with or without the extra ".txt" extension.

So, an inconspicuous feature of Total Commander is that the QuickView uses a file's content to decide what to do with it, rather than rely on the file's extension alone. I replaced the ".jpg" with ".txt" of a JPEG image, and QuickView still displayed it as it did before…
