TC8 32 and 64 bit difference

Post by *zdenkod »

Hello!

I bought WC (TC) so long ago, I even do not remember (>10 years) - #70192.
It's the best mini app on my computer all the time.
I'm computer specialist for more than 20 years.
CONGRATULATE TO THE AUTHOR!!

Please explain me (and others) the exact difference between 32 and 64 version. I know all about 32 and 64 CPU instructions, compilations ...
What's the difference from the user perspective?

Android = Linux, so when we can expect TC for Linux?

With kind regars to Christian.

If you need to ask then its better to stick with the 32 bit version - it has better compatibility. It runs on both 32 bit and 64 bit windows versions and supports all plugins. You should read this post:

http://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=25743

64 bit version only runs on 64 bit windows. It gives you a real view of the windows directory. Only a subset of the available plugins have been ported to 64 bit:

Hello, Zdenko.

Let me try to sum up the relevant differences for the normal users:
  • The 64-bit Total Commander edition can only be run on 64-bit Windows platforms.
  • The 32-bit Total Commander edition can be run on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms.
  • The 32-bit Total Commander edition, if run on a 64-bit Windows platform, is subjected to the limitations which the WoW64 subsystem imposes on 32-bit programs.
Cf. e.g. this thread: Windows x64: Explorer vs TC: Content of System32 different
  • The 64-bit Total Commander is not subjected to the limitations of the WoW64 subsystem
  • The 64-bit Total Commander can compare files by contents which are larger than 2 GB.
  • Talking about Total Commander plugins: The 32-bit Total Commander edition can only use 32-bit plugins.
  • The 64-bit Total Commander edition can only use 64-bit plugins.
Cf. this thread e.g. to learn which 64-bit plugins are available by now: 64-bit plugins (download list)
  • Apart from the details mentioned above, the user should notice no difference between Total Commander 32-bit and Total Commander 64-bit. They should behave exactly in the same way.
Finally let me give an answer to a question which you did not ask: Why then has Total Commander 8.0 64-bit been created at all?
The number of 64-bit Windows systems is constantly increasing. Offering Total Commander as a genuine 64-bit application for these systems was a natural thing to do. After all nobody asks why developers offer 32-bit software for 32-bit Windows and no longer 16-bit software.

Kind regards,
Karl

Dear Karlchen!

Please be kindlier and respectful. Your quotation about my knowledge and sarcastic answers were unnecessary.

But thank you for the last part that was the answer to my question.

Regards!

That's because you asked some obvious things, which is clear to all people, even who have less than 20 years of computer expirience :)

The mouse scrolling behavior is an important difference, too: viewtopic.php?t=39718 (post_id=280776).
