What is the addition in 9.21 about png images?

Post by *Flint »

There is an item in history.txt for 9.21rc1:
18.07.18 Added: Also show png images in addition to icons from ico/dll/exe files defined in file associations (32/64)
Could you please explain what it is about? I just could not understand what it actually meant. It sounds as if we can now specify PNG images instead of icons in the file associations, but when I looked at the associations dialog I did not notice any difference, PNG images are ignored (I tried both actual image files and exe/dll with build-in PNG image resources), they are simply not displayed in the list of available icons.

I got complains that TC didn't display the icons for a certain file type. It turned out that instead of an .ico file (or .exe/.dll) as defaultIcon, a png file was set. Apparently the Windows 10 Explorer supports that.

Currently TC will only show such icons in the file lists, but not in Files - Associate - Edit type (and Change Icons), due to a lack of function to show them there.

Can you give an example of such a file type?

The user who reported it used Microsoft Power BI:
https://powerbi.microsoft.com<https://powerbi.microsoft.com/hu-hu/

But you can test it yourself, e.g. set the icon for txt files to a png image via
Files - Associate - Edit type - Change icon

Please note that the PNG is NOT displayed there, just in the main Total Commander. It may also need a restart of TC to view that icon due to a caching bug in Windows function SHGetFileInfo.

Aha - I see - it seems to work, but you have to enter the filename manually, since the Windows' Browse dialog only allows *.exe;*.dll;*.ico:*.icl

You can type *.png in the file name field and press ENTER to see png files.
